John McDuffee IV was born on 23 December 1828 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1,2

John McDuffee IV died on 5 April 1915 in Belmont, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 86. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Winslow Sherman.2
John McDuffee IV was also known as John McDuffie.2

John McDuffee left school when he 17 years old and went to work in Warren's Dry Goods Store. Later he was employed in Harvey's Feed Store, Merchant's Row, as a bookkeeper. In 1861, he was appointed Post Master of Cambridgeport, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, by President Lincoln, holding the position for 13 years until about 1874. He was elected to the Cambridge school committee in 1860 and served two years. In 1866, he was elected to the Common Council and re-elected in 1867. John McDuffee later served three terms in the Massachusetts Legislature. He was elected Clerk of Committees in 1867. He was widely known and much esteemed and completed a quarter of a century of official service.1

He was Clerk of committees for the Cambridge, MA, city government and Postmaster at Cambridgeport, MA, under Presidents Lincoln, Johnson and Grant.
