BirthApr 21, 1825Winchester, England1
BiographyHis baptism is recorded in the RC church records. He joined the 38th Reg. of foot, the same regiment as his brother in law, Lt. Col. John Evans who was married to his sister Elizabeth. John emigrated to Canada. The descendants of the Evans all live in Canada and America and we have a DNA match to them. James remains a mystery. Family tradition has it that he ran off with one of the officer’s wives and went to S. America and became a high ranking officer. I have been unable to find any trace of him but he had several children one of whom is my great grandfather James Henry Houghton.

ResearchPaul Houghton: I have been unable to find out much about them as the early Owslebury parish records are very difficult to read on microfiche but I found their marriage. They probably had at least 2 children one called Samuel and the other my great great great grandfather Stephen Houghton. Samuel continued to live in the village but Stephen moved to Winchester a few miles away. He may have been in the army. I’m still researching all this as it’s not absolutely conclusive that Richard was Stephen’s father.1
