ESSEX - Wesley Vanderhorst, 81, passed away Dec. 7 after a long illness.

He was born July 16, 1931, in Albany, the son of the late George and Mary (Balmer) Vanderhorst. Wes attended Cornell University on a football scholarship before joining the U.S. Navy for the Korean War. He served two years on the U.S.S. Wisconsin. After his service, he graduated from St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in economics and began his 30-year career with N.Y. Telephone in Canton. As a business manager and regional director for N.Y. Telephone, he oversaw operations in Olean and Utica and lived in Olean and Clinton for his career.

He was an active civic leader in every community he lived in, holding leadership positions in Kiwanis, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, Lake Champlain Committee, the Smith House and Essex Community Church. He retired to Essex in 1988 and became Essex town supervisor for two years. He became a charter member of the "do nothing club" and was active in various social events in the community. He was known for his outgoing and caring personality, love of the Adirondacks and a deep sense of belonging to the community. He lived his life to be well liked and loved by all, and he accomplished that goal.

He was married 43 years to Jessie Lue Vanderhorst, who passed away in 1998, and remarried Billie Houghton Vanderhorst in 2000.
Wes is survived by his wife, Billie Houghton; his sister, Joan Brust of Indiana Pa; four children, Wesley Gerritt Vanderhorst Jr. of Eureka, Cailf., Leisa Hill of Middletown R.I., Paula Vanderhorst Thomas of Needham, Mass., and Gregory Scott Vanderhorst of Williamsville; nine grandchildren; three stepchildren; and five step grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Essex Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Wesley's memory may be made to High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care in Mineville NY.

My father was Maltese. He married my mother, who is American. My father, Gaudenzio Coleiro was from Zebbug (his ancestors from Zebbug and Zurrieq). My maternal grandfather was Joseph McGinn and his parents were Thomas McGinn and Annie Houghton. Annie came from Nova Scotia, Canada.

When I was 7, my father moved us to Malta. We lived there until I was 13 and during which time my sisters were born. We came back to the US in 1973.

I just managed to put together a family reunion to Malta this past summer. Seventeen of us from the US, 20 for the UK and 2 from Australia all met with our cousins in Malta. It was quite phenomenal and, although my father had been gone for 13 years, I feel I have fulfilled something he has wanted his whole life (for my sisters and his grandchildren to go and meet our cousins).
