Hi Kathleen,

In response to your question of family stories. Yes, my mother told me of the Edward J. Houghton civil war medal when I was young. In the letters,I sent to you under separate cover, you will see a reference to Uncle Andy Houghton. This Andy was Edward’s younger brother.

Although Andy is referred to as uncle... in realty he was a first cousin to Catherine T. Houghton. From what I understand, Andy was very close to Catherine and her children.

My grandfather Edward Houghton was Andy’s uncle. Too confuse matters even more...my grandfather also served in the civil war. He was a private in the 28th MA infantry. You will see this name come up many times in Katherine Doherty’s 1958 letter.

Edward, Andy and Richard Houghton (all brothers) were born in the 1840’s. They were raised and lived in East Boston. Their father’s name was Richard Houghton who died in 1860. The three brothers were all civil war veterans. Richard had two other boys Thomas and Charles who did not serve in the war. Your link is to Charles E.J. Houghton. His son was Dr. Richard Houghton.

My grandfather Edward Houghton was born in Ireland around 1815. His brother Richard Houghton was born I believe in 1810. My grandfather was wounded at Antietam in 1862. He lost use of his left leg and walked with a severe limp until his death in 1890. Family stories are they wanted to amputate his leg, and he pulled his pistol on the doctor. It was left on and he was discharged about nine months later from a hospital in Maryland. He did collect a military pension and I actually have a X-ray of his leg.

Edward J. Houghton who is buried in Holyhood Cemetery. He was murdered in 1865 while on shore leave. This Edward served in both the infantry and Navy. He earned the congressional Medal of Honor in 1864 for participating in navel actions. I have a newspaper clipping of his murder that took place in July 1865. I believe Edward was born in 1841 and so was only about twenty-four when he died. I will send you this news article later on...

Hopefully I do not confuse the living day lights out of you. My grandmother Catherine T. Houghton’s father was Edward Houghton. I believe my grandfather Edward probably helped take care of his brother Richard’s children when he died. Richard’s children born in the 1840s are: Edward, Andy, Richard, Thomas and Charles.

Happy New Years,
Eric Williams

Biographypage 16 no 128 November 28 1819 Edmund son of Peter & Sarah HOUGHTON Durley Hoop Maker

"The men involved in the riots at Durley were tried before the Special Commission for Hampshire, in December 1830. They were Peter Houghton, age 34, James Houghton, age 39, Richard Etherington, age 20, John Stoneage, age 49, and John Chalk, age 32. They appeared before Mr. Justice Parke, on Tuesday the 28th December, charged with destroying Thomas Pink's threshing machine. A brief report of the trial appeared in The Times, 30th December 1830. "It appeared that the prisoners formed part of a mob which assembled at the parish of Durley, on the 22nd November, and destroyed a threshing machine, the property of Thomas Pink. All the prisoners, except James Houghton, were proved to have taken an active part on that occasion. Peter and James Houghton were tithingmen in their division. The Reverend Mr Haygarth, the clergyman of the parish in which the prisoners - the Houghtons and Stoneage - resided, gave them an excellent character for honesty and inoffensive behaviour. They were always looked upon as honest and respectable men in their parish, and were regular in their attendance at church. The Reverend Gentleman added, that during the eight years in which he had resided at Durley, he was happy to say, that except for this case there had not been one commitment to Winchester for any offence. The Jury acquitted James Houghton, but found the others guilty, and recommended them to mercy" James Houghton was the great-great-grandfather of Gwen Houghton. He lived at that time at Wintershill Common. Peter Houghton was sentenced to transportation for 7 years, he left a wife and 5 children 'on the parish at Durley', and died in Hobart Town hospital on the 14th July 1831. He had also lived at Wintershill Common. John Stoneage was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in the House of Correction, with hard labour. He owned and lived in Sciviers Lane in a house and garden on the present site of 'Flintstones' and 'The Brambles'. Thomas Pink farmed the Greenwood estate.

Peter Houghton, born 10.1.1801 who was sentenced in the Winchester Assizes as a 'Machine Breaker' (or 'Swing Rioter') and sentenced to 7 years transportation to 'Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania). He died in Hobart Hospital on 14.7.1831 (of unknown causes) 6 weeks after his arrival in Hobart. He left a wife and 5 children 'on the parish' when transported, and another child (Sarah Wadmore Houghton) was born in June 1831. The poor woman was obviously newly pregnant when he was arrested.1
