Chicago, Cook Co., IL, USA, Bethsebe Lou "Betsy" Houghton of Antioch Betsy Houghton, 75, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was born June 8, 1936, in Zion, Ill., the daughter of the late Roy and Esther (Wadkins) Hosken. Betsy received her bachelor's of education in 1957 from Illinois State and was a Hall of Fame teacher; she received her master's degree of education in 1990 from National-Louis University. She had taught first grade for over 30 years in Oakland, Fox Lake and Channel Lake Schools, mostly in District 34. She was a very active member of the United Methodist Church of Antioch, serving as treasurer, director of vacation bible school and weekly bible study; was past president and served in other capacities for the United Methodist Women; served on District and Northern Illinois Conference of UMC as trustee, in the School of Christian Missions and participated in Mission trips. Betsy had served as a member of the board of directors and treasurer for the Antioch Public Library for several years. She loved sewing, knitting, book club, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, was a member of the Antioch Garden Club and a lifelong Cubs Fan. Survivors are three children, Patrick (Elizabeth) Houghton, Darren (Renee) Houghton and Judith (James) Horsch; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Sarah, Allison, Conor, Rebecca, Ashlyn and Cailyn; and her siblings, William Hosken, Richard (Dianne) Hosken and Cynthia (Gerald) Maki. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a younger brother, Clyde Hosken. Memorial funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Aug. 12, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. , at the Antioch United Methodist Church, 848 Main St, Antioch, with the Rev. Barbara Good officiating. Private interment of her cremains will be in Mount Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, Ill. Friends desiring may make contributions, in her memory, to the United Methodist Church of Antioch or the Antioch Public Library District. Arrangements are entrusted to the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, 847-395-4000. Published in Chicago Suburban Daily Herald on August 10, 2011¹
