NEW BOSTON - Mark Whitney Houghton, 46 of New Boston, passed away from a short-lived battle with cancer on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013.

He was born in Manchester, on Jan. 14, 1967, to Neila Daggett, and the late Charles Houghton Sr. Mark graduated from Milford High School in 1985. He was a self-employed contractor who specialized in precision flooring.

Mark had a strong passion for sports. As a youngster, he competed in many sports. He was a New England regional finalist for "Pitch, Hit and Run." In school, Mark participated in soccer, basketball and baseball. For much of his adult life, he played pick-up basketball, fast- and modified-pitch softball, tennis, and golf. He was part of several championship teams. Mark was a big fan of all New England sports teams. He was a competitive card, horseshoe, ping-pong, dart, and billiards player. Mark was an avid freshwater fisherman who loved to ice fish.

Mark had a great sense of humor, and an unusual kindness. He cared deeply for animals, particularly his pet cats, and his dog Mickey. He was loved immensely by his family and friends, and will be sincerely missed.

Mark is survived by his mother Neila Daggett; his two brothers, Charlie and Larry Houghton; his stepfather, Fred Daggett; his stepmom, Kathy Houghton; his long-term partner, Kirsten Duval; his nephew Connor Houghton, niece Monica Houghton, and many close aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

"Remember: Anyone can love you when the sun is shining. In the storms is where you learn who truly cares for you".

He was compassionate, kind, and caring

A memorial service will be held at the New Boston cemetery in the spring of 2014.
