Gladys Grimos Haughton, 84, of Montgomery, and formerly of Selma, died Tuesday, Aug. 25 at a Montgomery hospital. Graveside services arc at 10 a.m.
I Friday, Aug. 28 at New Live Oak Cemetery with Dr. Jerry Henry officiating and Lawrence Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lawrence Funeral Home, Survivors include her husband, Kenneth C. Haughton of Montgomery; two sons. Kenneth H. Haughton of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and M. Bristol Haughton of Haleyville; a daughter, Mrs. Carl W, (Jobeth) Nelson Jr. of Selma and ten grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Marvin Bristol Houghton Jr., Kent Haughton, Christopher Haughton, George Baker Haughton, Kenneth C. Nelson, Leslie W. Nelson and David Faith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a favorite charity.

I'm an oceanographer, and spent my career working for the Interior Department. Took an early-out in 99, and I've been teaching in foreign countries for UNESCO ever since.

Research

Dr. Brown was a senior program manager with the Minerals Management service, having managed over thirty U.S. government offshore studies projects between 1978-1994, mainly involving the Gulf of Mexico. Since 1992, Dr. Brown has been a principal author of the IOC/IODE "OceanTeacher" training materials in ocean data management (http://www.oceanteacher.org/oceanteacher/index.php/OceanTeacher), instructing hundreds of students from nearly 100 countries. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Duke University in 1969, and a Licentiate Scientiarum (Ph.D.) in Marine Chemistry from the University of Copenhagen in 1975.

I got a BS in chemistry from Duke, then went straight into a Ph.D. program in marine chemistry at the Univ. of Copenhagen. For a number of reasons... I didn't go into research per se, but spent my career managing government environmental programs for the offshore oil and gas program. They moved me around so many times, that I became a generalist in all sorts of marine science, eventually ending up as a data and information manager. That's essentially what I teach for UNESCO now.
