While at Pennsylvania, he was an assistant in botany for the 1925-26 academic year, and during the following academic year he was an instructor of biology at Temple University. When he graduated, he too became a professor of biology at the University of Delaware. He was a member of many of the same professional and social organizations as his father, including the Newark Country Club.

Roy Houghton came to Canada in 1905, arriving in Regina, Saskatchewan where he lived the first winter. In the spring of 1906, he worked as a
farm laborer at Pense. That year he came to Davidson and took up a homestead nine miles west and four miles south of Davidson [on] NW 9-25-3 west of the third meridian. A small shack was built where he lived until he bought the S half 17-25-3 west of the third meridian. His brother Dr. Mark Houghton bought the north half of the same section, which my father [Roy Houghton] bought from him some years later. My father built a sod house and stable on the southwest quarter and lived there.

In the fall of 1906 [should be 1907 - ds] he went back to his home town in the States where he married his life-long sweetheart Grace Nancy
Devendorf on Christmas Eve at the Devendorf home. After the wedding they spent the winter visiting relatives before leaving for Saskatchewan, which turned out to be their life-long home.

Mother was very lonely. Everything was strange to her, and there were many transients travelling by on foot, carrying their belongings. She was
afraid when they would stop for a bite to eat, because she was alone quite a bit of the time. Elbow [Saskatchewan] was just being built, which
attracted many men.

The crops were good on the newly cultivated land. In a couple of years, father built a two-roomed house which they lived in until 1911. The house was moved about a quarter of a mile in from the road where water was found. A 35-foot soft spring water well was dug, and many neighbors hauled water for their stock and drinking, as they couldn't find good water on their farms.

In 1917 a large hip-roofed barn was built. My father had quite a few good horses, and took great pride in his stock. He could not stand to see an
animal abused.

In 1919, the first car was bought, a 490 Chevrolet which was a great treat for all the family. Mother learned to drive. There was no driver training
as we have today.

The family consisted of four daughters and two sons. All were born at the farm home, most with just a midwife, Miss Wilson, an English nurse,
present. There may have been a doctor at some of the births.

As soon as we children were old enough to help, we were given chores to do -- some milking and others feeding calves -- as by this time there were
quite a number of cows to milk. I worked outside with my father as soon as I was old enought to drive horses. It was my job every year to seed the fall rye. After the crop was cut with the binder, a hired man stooked [set up shocks - British variant - ds] the grain. Corn and sunflowers were
grown for feed and chopped in my father's underground silo.

The boys did a lot of trapping of weasels, badgers and coyotes in winter. In the fall, the men hauled wood from the sand hills for firewood, and
coal and briquettes were burned too. There were many hardships during the life of our parents.

When Dad made a trip to town, he always brought us a 10-cent bag of candy. We kids were very happy and it was ample for six of us. My brother Ralph usually took his share and hid it; he hoarded anything that he received. We never had much of toys. Our parents could not afford it for six kids. I remember how excited I was whne I got my first Eaton Beauty doll. I kept it until my youngest sister go hold of it.

I was the oldest of the six children, and there was an earthquake a few days after I was born. As Bill was old enough to help Dad, I started to
work out after I finished my Grade eight at school. We had four and a half miles to go to Woodmere school. mother took us in the summer and Dad in the winter, until we were old enough to drive horses ourselves. There were many minor accidents, horses running away or buggy wheels coming off. I guess this was all in the game in those days. If we missed school for so many days the truant officer would be finding out why we weren't at school if under 15 years old. In 1927, I took a course in home economics for four months at Regina College which I enjoyed nad has helped me in many ways throught my lifetime.

The drought and dust storms came in the 1930s, which hurt the farmers very badly as the high winds would blow the seed out of the ground and form sandpiles everywhere. My father and Bill Barlow took a trip to Vanderhoof, B.C. in search of something better but to their disappointment they found just bogholes and water everywhere. Eventually things began to be a bit more on the bright side and by 1940 the rains came make the crops flourish.

We were luckier than some children as mother was a seamstress and a lot of our clothes were made from dyed flour and sugar sacks, and hand-me-downs were made over into coats. The family farm was sold to the Hundeby Bros. in 1974.

In 1917 a large hip-roofed barn was built. My father had quite a few good horses, and took great pride in his stock. He could not stand to see an animal abused....

In 1919, the first car was bought, a 490 Chevrolet which was a great treat for all the family. Mother learned to drive. There was no driver training as we have today.

The family consisted of four daughters and two sons. All were born at the farm home, most with just a midwife, Miss Wilson, an English nurse, present. There may have been a doctor at some of the births:

As soon as we children were old enough to help, we were given chores to do -- some milking and others feeding calves -- as by this time there were quite a number of cows to milk. I worked outside with my father as soon as I was old enough to drive horses. It was my job every year to seed the fall rye. After the crop was cut with the binder, a hired man stooked [set up shocks - British variant - ds] the grain. Corn and sunflowers were grown for feed and chopped in my father's underground silo.

The boys did a lot of trapping of weasels, badgers and coyotes in winter. In the fall, the men hauled wood from the sand hills for firewood, and coal and briquettes were burned too. There were many hardships during the life of our parents.

When Dad made a trip to town, he always brought us a 10-cent bag of candy. We kids were very happy and it was ample for six of us. My brother Ralph usually took his share and hid it; he hoarded anything that he received. We never had much for toys. Our parents could not afford it for six kids. I remember how excited I was when I got my first Eaton Beauty doll. I kept it until my youngest sister got hold of it.

I was the oldest of the six children, and there was an earthquake a few days after I was born. As Bill was old enough to help Dad, I started to work out after I finished my Grade eight at school. We had four and half miles to go to Woodmere school. Mother took us in the summer and Dad in the winter, until we were old enough to drive horses ourselves. There were many minor accidents, horses running away or buggy wheels coming off. I guess this was all in the game in those days. If we missed school for so many days the truant officer would be finding out why we weren't at school if under 15 years old. In 1927, I took a course in home economics for four months at Regina College which I enjoyed and has helped me in many ways throughout my lifetime.

The drought and dust storms came in the 1930s, which hurt the farmers very badly as the high winds would blow the seed out of the ground and form sandpiles everywhere. My father and Bill Barlow took a trip to Vanderhoof, B.C. in search of something better but to their disappointment they found just bogholes and water everywhere. Eventually things began to be a bit more on the bright side and by 1940 the rains came and made the crops flourish. We were luckier than some children as mother was a seamstress and a lot of our clothes were made from dyed flour and sugar sacks, and hand-me-downs were made over into coats.

[Here begins a more personal and genealogical section of the article. It was written ca 1984, so there will no doubt have been many births, deaths, marriages and probably divorces since then -- nearly thirty years ago as of 2013. The reader should keep that in mind -- ds].

1. I [Marion Houghton] married Robert John Carroll November 25, 1942. We have two sons. John Robert married Lucille Rauling of Hanley. They have one son Troy Anson and live in Regina. John drove a gravel truck and cement truck when the Diefenbaker and Qu'Appelle Dams were built. He is still [ca 1984] driving trucks, mostly in the States. Lucille is a secretary for Imperial Oil. Wayne Carroll married Marilyn Herback of Unity. He worked at different things until they were married. Then he worked for the Dairy Pool in Saskatoon. Marilyn worked for Smith Rolls, and on November 1, 1980 they moved to Meadow Lake where they run a bakery. They have a son Cory Wayne and a daughter Tara Lynn [and a daughter Dana.] Robert John Carroll died 13 May 1990.

2. Florence married Charles Pippus on November 14, 1939. They moved to Prairie Grove, Manitoba, where Charlie farmed and had a small dairy, later moving to Winnipeg, where he worked for Sherwin Williams Paint Co. until he passed away very suddenly December 26, 1965. Florence did VON [Victorian Order of Nurses] work in Winnipeg until she married John Pippus in 1974, a brother of her first husband. They have retired and live in Estevan. There were three daughters by the first marriage. Carol Grace married Allen Bork. They have a son Jeffrey and a daughter Debra. Carol lives in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Marjorie married Emille Pilott and lives in Steinbach, Manitoba. They have two chidren, Leta Marie and Blair Emille. Janice married Jerry Goegel. They addopted two ... children, and had one child of their own. They live in Kenora, Ontario.

3. William Donald married Kathleen Doughan, December 25, 1944 and lived on the home farm. She was a school teacher. They had three children. Lynda Marleen is married to Gilles La Voie and lives in Moose Jaw, with two sons and a daughter. Murray William lives in Elbow and works for the R.M. of Willner. Myrna Joy lives in Moose Jaw and is in grade twelve.

4. Dorothy Grace married Harold Minelly of Elbow in November 1936. He passed away suddenly. He joined the army when the war broke out and was stationed at London, Ontario; then he continued to work as a civilian army mechanic after the war. There were two children. Donna Gayle married Max Robbins. They adopted two ... [boys who were] brothers. Garry married Geraldine Mead. They have two daughters, Heather and Brenda and a son Michael.

5. Ralph Roy married Mary Edna Carroll of Girvin in October, 1942. He joined the RCAF when the war broke out and trained as an aero mechanic. When the war was over they moved to Surrey, B.C. Mary, a teacher, taught for some time and was also a librarian. They have retired at Mission, B.C. They have three sons, twins James and Jack, and Gerald Ross. Gerald is married and lives at Prince George and has has two sons Scott and Jason.

6. Harriet Eileen married Leslie Carroll April 14, 1943 at Dauphin, Manitoba where Les was an airframe mechanic in the RCAF. He joined in 1939 and spent one year overseas. Harriet was a hair dresser in Dauphin. When Les was retired from the forces they moved to Kelowna, B.C., where he worked in a hardware and lumber yard at Westbank. They have retired now. They have one daughter and two sons. Fay Marleen married Bill Danson in Barrie, Ontario. Faye is a registered nurse, divorced now and living in Calgary. She has two daughters Heather and Jillian. Cameron Leslie married Beverly Bull at Kingston, Ontario. They have one son Jeffery. Richard Lee married Leanne Lomazand and lives in Calgary. They have one daughter.


There were three Carroll-Houghton marriages.

My father passed away on July 21, 1941 at age 60. Mother passed away at age 86 [ca 1968]. William [Donald] Houghton passed away on March 1, 1971 [should be 1972 per obit - ds]. The family farm was sold to the Hundeby Bros. in 1974.2,6
