--------- Colgrove, Joshua L. (24 MAR 1832 - 1 FEB 1923)

Joshua L. Colgrove was born in Charleston, Montgomery Co., N.Y., March 24, 1832, and died at his home south of Humbird, Clark County, Wis., on Thursday, Feb. 1, 1923, aged 90 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was the youngest of a family of twelve children.

In 1863 he came to Harmony, Ill. and on July 4, 1836, he was united in marriage with Miss Almira Wells at that place. To this union was born one daughter. In 1869, they moved, with a party by wagon train, to this vicinity, buying land and building a house on the farm now known as the Sam Jones place.

Mr. Colgrove's mother's maiden name was Mary Brewster of the Mayflower. In his young manhood he was a stone mason, laying, as he frequently said, many miles of stone wall fencing. Later he learned the cabinet-maker's trade, meaning the making of furniture, and also did carpenter work. The alter years of his activity was spent in farming, his home being on the farm where he died, for fifty-one years. Mrs. Colgrove, his beloved helpmate, passed to her Heavenly reward, on Aug. 18, 1918.

Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Rundle, who, with her husband, moved here from Chippewa Falls, thirteen years ago, and have tenderly cared for both parents during their declining years. Mr. Colgrove has been for more than half a century, a much respected and highly esteemed citizen of this community. He was very fond of children, and always had a kind word for them when he came in contact with them.

The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at his late home, and were attended by a large number of friends. Rev. A. J. Coram preached a very appropriate funeral sermon on a life of service to others. Burial was made beside his wife in the Houghtonburg Cemetery. Mrs. Laura Davis, a niece from Marengo, Ill., was the only relative from away here to attend the services.2

--------- Colgrove, J. D. (24 MAR 1832)

J. D. Colgrove was born March 24, 1832 in Montgomery Co., N.Y; came to Wisconsin in 1866 and settled in Houghtonburg, where he still resides. He was married July 4, 1866 to Miss Myra Wells, who is still living. But one child was born to them, who is now Mrs. Henry Rundle and resides at Neillsville. Ever since first coming here Mr. Colgrove has owned a farm about one mile south of town and on which he still lives. His opinion of this reawakening of Humbird, Clark County, Wis., is that it is due to the prosperity of the farmers and the right kind of businessmen; he believes that if our businessmen continue in the right path that the future of Humbird is very bright, but if not, we are likely to fall once more into the old rut, from which in all likelihood we would never again emerge. Mr. Colgrove believe that in the last year we have gone ahead of all small towns in our neighborhood.3
