BiographyWhittier: "He received his early education in the Boston schools. His parents were Unitarians and attendants at the Federal St. Church, now known as the Arlington St. Church; but when still a young man he showed an independence of character by uniting, 3 June 1804, with the First Baptist Church of Boston, then under the charge of Rev. Samuel Stillman, by whose advice he decided to enter the ministry. His theological education however was under the direction of Rev. William Williams of Wrentham, Mass. He was ordained at Bellingham, MA in 1809 and began his pastorate at Medfield, MA. in the following year. He was an acceptable preacher and a faithful pastor in the care of his congregation, by whom he was greatly beloved.
The years of Mr. Gammell's residence in Medfield form the period in which the benevolent societies of the denomination had their origin. In their formation he took a lively interest and rendered important aid by his executive ability. In 1817 he received the honorary degree of A.M. from Brown University, and was a trustee from 1820-1827.
In 1823 he was called to the Second Baptist Church in Newwport, R.I. This pastorate which was growing in usefulness and power was suddenly terminated by his death, which occurred 30 May 1827. While a resident of Newport he aided largely in the establishment of free schools, until then unknown in the city. He was esteemed for his intellectual qualities and sincere piety, and was known as an earnest friend to every object connected with the extension of Christianity."6

BiographyWhittier: "In his younger days he followed the sea and later in life he was familiarly known as Capt. Urann. On 18 June 1808 he purchased land at Dorchestor of Mary Searles and Abigail Montaue of Lunenburg, MA, and in 1810 and 1813 adjoining land on Dorchester turnpike (called Dorchester Avenue in 1854) near Pond Street, where the family resided for many years. He also purchased large tracts of land at Commercial Point and Cow Pasture, Dorchester. On 12 Aug 1833 he purchased a tract of land lying near Dedham Stree, to the east of Washington St., Boston where he carried on a planing and wood-turning business.
While he was a resident of Dorchester for many years he undoubtedly was a resident of Boston from 1834 to 1846. In 1841 he served as a member of the Boston City Council from Ward 11, and in 1842 and 1843 as one of the Board of Aldermen.
A copy of his will, dated 25 June 1861, was filed in Court but was disallowed and an administrator was appointed 11 May 1863.
His children were baptized at the First Church in Dorchester and the family were buried in the Richard Urann tomb in the Dorchester North Cemetery."9
