Biography

"His early boyhood days were passed at Medfield. He was a close companion of his father and inherited many of his qualities and characteristics. The removal of the family to Newport in 1823, gave him an opportunity to prepare for college at the classical school there. He entered Brown University in 1827. His record in the four years' course was that of a faithful and earnest scholar, who attended for the sole purpose of getting and education, and who was determined to make the most of his privileges. In 1831 he graduated with the first honors of his class, and the following year was appointed a tutor in the University. The Catalogue of 1834 styles him 'Tutor and Lecturer in the Latin Language and Literature.'. In 1837 he was made Professor of Rhetoric, and in the Department of Belle-Lettres was associated with Professor William G. Goddard, who undoubtedly had great influence in shaping his literary culture. In 1850 he became head of a new department in history for which he had shown peculiar fitness. As a scholar and teacher his influence and efficiency steadily increased, and as a college officer he rendered valuable service. His standards were high, his criticisms fair and just, and his patience with the students untiring. His offical connection with the University continued through thirty-two years, and great regret was manifested at his retirement.
Prof. Gammell continued to reside in Providence and gave his services to causes of learning, benevolence and public usefulness. In 1859 he received the degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Rochester, and in 1870 became one of the Board of Fellows of Brown University. He was president of the Providence Athenaeum and the Rhode Island Bible Society, and also a vice-president of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, as well as a life member. In 1882 he became president of the Rhode Island Historical Society and ever manifested the liveliest interest in its proceedings and welfare. The history of the State was always a fascinating theme to him and he breought to the notice of the Society in his various addresses new and important lines of historical investigation. For a number of years he was editor of the Christian Review and a valued contributor to may secular papets and magazines. He wrote the life of Roger Williams and of Gov. Samuel Ward, and a History of Baptist Missions. Prof. Gammell was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church from 1837 to the time of his death. His religious character was decided and deep, and he showed the greatest interest in everyting which pertained to the upbuilding of the Church."⁴
