He served King Sigbert III of Austrasia (634 -656) as a duke (Latin dux, a military leader) and domesticus. He was killed sometime before 679, slain in a feud by his enemy Gundewin.

He married sometime after 639 to Saint Begga, the daughter of Pepin of Landen.

ResidenceHerbert I Unknown resided Herbert I of Vermandois (ca. 848 - 907), Count of Vermandois, lord of Senlis, of Peronne and of Saint Quentin, was the son of Pepin of Vermandois. He is a Fourth Generation Descendant of Charlemagne. He is often reported to have married Bertha de Morvois, but this is now considered to be incorrect.
