He appears to be a devotee of Richard II and accompanied him, perhaps as a bodyguard at the Battle of Shrewsbury when he was knighted in 1386 - and to Ireland in 1399.

In 1395 he was bound over to keep the peace with Stephen, Abbot of Vale Royal, part of the surety being provided by his brother David de Bostock of Churton.

He commanded part of Percie's Army at the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403; subsequently, he was pardoned by King Henry IV, in spite of the issue previously of an attainder against him. Even later, he was commissioned by array to lead men at arms to defend the Welsh border country.
