| Biography | According to microfyche records at the Society of Australian Genealogists, Leo was a driver in the 1st Division of the Australian Infantry abroad ( AIF ) in the 1914-18 War, from 20 July 1916 to 20 June 1919. According to Wallace Peter Snelson, he was enlisted in the 116 Howitzer Battery, was demobbed and transferred to 1st Division Ammunition Column and served in France. After the War he farmed at Leeton until 1937. With his brother, he held pastoral leases at Cobar and retired to Wellington. Joan Betty Snelson, his daughter confirms that Leo was one of 8 children. He was educated at Cobar Public School and Sydney Grammar. In April 1909 Frank Ward's Store in Linsley Street, Cobar caught fire, but the prompt action of the towns people saved much of the stock. The Cobar Herald reorted " Master Leo Snelson although only quite a lad, was one of the best workers at Ward's fire, carrying goods across the street to a place of safety. Well Done Leo ". [:CR:]. |
