| Also Known As | Margaret G Webb was also known as Margaret Howlett. |
| Biography | Much of the information that has been sorted out regarding the Pierce families has been provided by my second cousin, Margaret Howlett (Webb) and her late mother "Gwen". I am indebted to them both and Stanley Webb for their work and family friendship since my early days. H.R. Sumpter was an office bearer for the Independent Order of Oddfellows in Lower Bridge Street, Chester - I went in to see if I could trace William the Oddfellow when I was in Chester in 1990, but could find no trace of either H.R. Sumpter or William Snelson. According to Tony Fox, the Sumpters were builders in Chester. They built "Sumpter's Pathway" in Chester and somewhere along the line were made Freemen of the City. Henry was wounded in the First World war and only had one leg. In 1946, according to his wife's death certificate, Henry was described as a retired soldier. He had served in two wars including the Boer war, when he was serving with the Chester Regiment in France. |
