NoteThe Saga of Stanley Arthur Webb ... this is a note from Margaret Webb

Mary Jane was my great-grandmother.
Emily was my grandmother.
Stanley was my father.

1. Emily Chadwin was going out with Arthur Willmore.
2. Emily went away in service & when she came back Arthur had married her widowed mother Mary Jane in 1901. Arthur was 24 & Mary Jane 42.
3. Emily had an illegitimate daughter in 1911 – registered in the name of Irene Chadwin.
4. Emily had an illegitimate son in 1913 – registered in the name of Stanley Arthur Chadwin but christened Kenneth Arthur Chadwin.
5. Some time later both birth certificates were altered manually, obviously & illegally to Irene Willmore & Stanley Arthur Webb.
6. Emily became known as Mrs Webb although she never married.
7. Irene got married & her marriage certificate states that she was the daughter of Arthur Willmore (although he was actually married to her grandmother).
8. Stanley got married & his marriage certificate states that he was the son of Sydney Webb, political agent.
9. When Emily died her death certificate states that she was the widow of Sydney Webb, political agent. She never married anybody.
10. Irene always called Emily & Arthur - Aunty & Uncle. I have a postcard written to her when she was aged 1 from them – signed Aunty & Uncle.
11. Emily & Arthur shared the same house until their deaths.

I only learnt this after my dad had died as he was ashamed of being illegitimate. Apparently, he had always dreaded having to get a duplicate birth certificate for any reason as it would have shown him to have a different surname. I do not know if Sydney Webb existed. Having 2 illegitimate children around that time must have been bad enough for Emily but to alter birth certificates illegally & give the children different surnames makes it worse.
BirthHe was born on 8 August 1913 in England.
ResidenceHe resided in Labinowice, Poland, between 1942 and 1945 UK, British Army Prisoners of War, 1939-1945
