| Also Known As | Alice Snelston was also known as Alice Dugdale. |
| Birth | She was born in Foxbanck, Cheshire. |
| Biography | The Dugdale entry in the Visitation of London 1633/34 names Alice Snelson as being the daughter of John Snelston [5030] of Foxbanck, Cheshire. Although there is evidence that she is related closely to Roger Snelson [4878] as indicated in his will, he calls her his "kinswoman", the word could mean aunt, niece or cousin.
In the will which he wrote in 1647, Roger says that Alice Dugdale is the sister of Ellinor Hilton [4611], the wife of Thomas Hilton [4613]. So both Ellinor [4611] and Alice were originally "Snelson" as single ladies. Ellinor must also be the daughter of John Snelson of Foxbanck.
In his will, Roger does use the word "cozen" with regard to Frances Mellor [3100] and Francis Mellor's wife who Roger names as Mary Mellor, "my niece and kinswoman".
Back to Alice Snelson [4614] who married Robert Dugdale. Roger mentions in his will that Alice and Robert Dugdale have a daughter, also "Alice". Interestingly, Roger does not mention either young Robert Dugdale nor Alice's sister Mary. As we know that her unmarried surname is Snelson as shown in the Robert Dugdale pedigree in 1643, Alice must then be a sister of his father Richard Snelson [4369] - rather than a sister of his mother who we know was Elizabeth Broadhurst [3588].
Further, the same Alice appears in the will of Frances Mellor [3100] - the same Frances Mellor who is mentioned as a "cozen" in Roger Snelson's Will. |
