ProbateThe estate of William Snelson was probated on 22 November 1855 in Chester Mentioned in his will are Edward Snelson, shoemaker being no doubt his brother Edward Snelson [9], and George Dodd possible being her father [1465] as he is described as being a wheelwright coming from Saughull.10
His daughter Elizabeth Snelson was born on 3 February 1856.
BiographyWilliam died intestate, leaving a sum less than £200 to his widow, Margaret. The document which is the equivalent to his will is at the Cheshire Record Office and was drawn up on 21 November 1855, some three and a half weeks after his death on 28 October 1855 .... he was only 36 years old. The witnesses to the document were

Margaret Snelson, 33 Handbridge Widow
George Dodd, Saughull Wheelwright
Edward Snelson, Handbridge Shoemaker
[:BOLD]
In 1841 William was living with his widowed mother at Eaton Road. Then, it appears from the marriage record at St. John's that he was living at Egerton Street.

This must be the William Snelson who was made a freeman of the city on 3rd June 1839, by right of birth, being the son of William Snelson who was made a free man on 30 March 1810. At first, I believed he was Robert Snelson b. 1867 ( the Cornfactor )'s grandfather, but some fine sleuthing by cousin Richard has pointed now to the greater likelihood that he was Robert's Uncle William.

The marriage record can be found in the BTs 1576-1933.
MarriageMary Snelson (Soreton?) and Samuel Fairbrother were married on 19 November 1782 in Tarvin The surname is unclear. The marriage record looks like her name is Mary "Snelon" or something like that. It is certainly not Staunton, Soreton or Storeton. The entry has been written I think by Thomas Smith, the curate as his name appears on many of the entries. On this entry, he writes that Mary is illiterate and cannot write her own name as he records that she makes her mark between her christian name and her surname. He has had to ask her what her name is - and then try and write it down. He just does his best with the spelling - and when he hears her surname he writes whatever he thinks she says.

Further, the transcript published by Ancestry.com says that her name is "Sarah Toreton". This is a shocking error but demonstrates how errors can be made. In this case. both names are wrong and poorly interpreted. How anyone could read "Mary" and write "Sarah" is just recklessly irresponsible. As for what looks like "Snelon" being repcorded as "Toreton" is just hopeless. Well,...
Her son Edward Fairbrother was born before 16 February 1783 in Chester.

ResidenceShe resided Richilde of the Ardennes, or Richilde of Provence (c. 845 -2 June 910), was the second wife of Charles the Bald, King and Emperor of the Franks. By her marriage, she became Queen of the West Franks, and then Empress of the Franks.

Richilde was the daughter of Bivin of Gorze, Count of the Ardennes, and the sister of Boso of Provence (of the Bosonid dynasty). Her aunt was Theutberga, the wife of Lothar II of Lotharingia. Her marriage to Charles the Bald, in 870 after the death of his first wife, Ermentrude of Orléans, was intended to secure his rule in Lotharingia through her powerful family and her connection to Theutberga, the previous Queen consort. She bore him five children, but only the eldest daughter, Rothilde (c. 871 -c. 928), who married first Hugues of Bourges and secondly Roger of Maine, survived to adulthood.

Whenever Charles went to war, Richilde managed the realm, and acted as head of state after the death of Charles in 877.

She planned to place her brother Boso, Duke of Burgundy, on the throne, after Louis the Stammerer (son of Charles the Bald and Ermentrude of Orléans) died shortly after his father while his children were too young to rule on their own. However, she was accused of incest with her brother and the lords of the kingdom refused to subject themselves to her authority. She then helped Boso to become King of Provence.

She attempted to assume a position of authority upon the death of Louis III in 882, and of Carloman II in 884; however, the empire was agitated and under threat by the Normans, and the grandees of the realm forced her to withdraw to Provence, where she died on 2 June 910.1
