Solomon Frank1

Solomon Frank was born on 10 January 1852 in Louisiana.2 He married first Rosa Morse Parham, daughter of John Greenway Parham and Eliza Huldah Morse, on 30 July 1879 in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.4 He married second Emma Smale.5 He died on 10 June 1949 at home in San Diego, San Diego Co., California, at age 97.2,6 He was interred at Greenwood Memorial Park (Corridor A, Tier D, Crypt 5) in San Diego.7
He and his first wife Rosa moved to Stephenville, Erath Co., Texas, in 1879, very shortly after their marriage6, where he opened a dry goods business and became quite successful.8,9 They are listed there in the 18808 and 1900 censuses.10 In 1891 he was elected alderman for Ward 2.11
He suffered a serious injury on 8 March 1892 when a sliver from a stone being cut at a building site flew into his left eye, causing him to lose the eye.12,3
In 1899 he sold his dry goods stock to his wife's sister Lucinda's husband Willard Chamberlain, who continued the business at the same site13, and in the 1900 census his occupation is listed as capitalist.10,14 In 1906 he joined the Dublin Realty Co. in Dublin, Erath Co., purchasing W. W. Eddleman's interest in the firm, becoming co-owner with his daughter Effie's husband Leon Sensabaugh.15
In 1906 he ran for representative from Erath Co. to the Texas legislature, but lost in a three-man race in the Democratic primary. He finished second to T. J. Roberson, 2223 votes to 1071.16
He and Rosa moved to San Diego, San Diego Co., California, in 1909, leaving on 5 July and arriving six days later17,18, and they are listed there in the 191019 and 1920 censuses.20 He was apparently good friends with one of the newspapermen in Stephenville, and a news article before their move said that in California he could "revel in sunshine, fruits and flowers until death comes to escort him over the river."21 He returned to Stephenville for a visit in November 1909, and an article that month said that "Hon. Sol. Frank, who claims to be the handsomest man on the Pacific slope, is visiting friends in the city. Everybody here knows that Mr. Frank left Erath county because he and Tom Spradling and the Tribune man were rivals for the first position for 'homely features,' and Mr. Frank has won out in California."22
After his wife Rosa's death, he and his daughter Bettie moved to 4360 Georgia in San Diego, next door to his daughter Ludie and her husband Chester.23,24
In 1925 he and Bettie traveled to Europe together, as part of a tour. They left San Diego on 15 January, first headed for Nashville, Tennessee, then to New York City. From their passport applications, they planned to sail from New York on the Cunard line's RMS Laconia on 31 January, and visit Spain, Italy, Egypt, Greece, England, France, Turkey, and Palestine.3,25,26 They returned home on the RMS Caronia, leaving Liverpool, England, on 2 May, and arriving in New York on 11 May.27
He continued to live in San Diego, and he and his second wife Emma, and his daughter Bettie, are listed there at 4360 Georgia in the 1930 census.28 They are again listed together in 1940, in the same house, but with Bettie listed as the head of household.29
