     He was born on 3 June 1881 at Silksworth, Durham County, England,4,2; or, on 3 June 1881 at Holmside, England, according to the family entry in the Asquith history. Note that Holmside and Silksworth are about 14 miles apart.3 William married Ada Peacock on 20 August 1918 at Springwell, Durham County, England.5,4,6
     William Lake died on 10 October 1965, near Asquith, at Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 84.6
     The following selected information is extracted from the obituary of William Lake. The cause of his death was given as a car-pedestrian collision as he tried to cross Highway 14 at Asquith.7
     William Lake was buried on 13 October 1965 at Asquith Cemetery, RM of Vanscoy No. 345, Saskatchewan, Canada.6
     
Military Service - Boer war

     William Lake began military service in 1899.3 William Lake ended his military service in 1902

Family Background:
     Four of William Lake, Sr's sons enlisted and served during WWI. Three served in France; William, Thomas and Ingram. William was wounded several times, most seriously at Passchendaele. Thomas died in the trenches. George joined the Imperial Forces in England rather than the CEF.
Other comments:
     William enlisted as a private soldier but was soon recognized as leadership material, serving as a corporal during the ocean voyage to England but reverting to the ranks at his own request upon arrival at Bramshott. But he was again promoted to successively higher ranks until he received a field commission as Lieutenant in mid-May 1917. He was wounded twice. During his extended convalescence after his Passchendaele wound, he married Ada Peacock of his native County Durham.4


Canadian Military Service - WWI

     William Lake began military service on 20 December 1914 at the age of 33 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 9th Overseas Mounted Rifle Regiment as a private. He declared himself an unmarried farmer. He was active in the militia, and had previously served for a year and six months in the Durham Light Infantry, as well as one year and six months in the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. He was described as being 5' 7 1/2" with a fair compexion, hazel eyes and black hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, William Lake of Asquith. He was assigned regimental number 114512.4
     On 23 November 1915, at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, he embarked on the "S.S. Califonia (sic)" arriving in England on 03 Dec 1915 and joining the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles in France on 20 Jan 1916.4
     On 3 June 1916, at France, he was admitted to hospital for a bruised thigh (right leg) and shell shock. During his convalescence at Etaples in France he was promoted to acting Corporal on 16 Sep 1916. With his discharge on 27 Sep 1916 he was promoted to Corporal, and three weeks later to acting Sergeant. He was promoted to Sergeant on 3 Feb 1917 and three months later on 19 May 1917 he received a field commission as Lieutenant.4
     On 8 May 1917, he was promoted to commissioned rank (Lieutenant) with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles according to his Certificate of Service.4
     On 30 October 1917, at Passchendaele, Belgium, during an attack, he received a gunshot wound to his left shoulder fracturing an end of his scapula and was hospitalized until 07 May 1918. His service file contains x-rays of this injury.4
     On 17 October 1918, he was sent back to Canada aboard the "S.S. Olympic."4 Lt. William Lake ended military service as part of general demobilization on 16 November 1918 at Canada at an unspecified location. An entry in his service file gives his wife's address as Alsask, so they may have settled there after the war.

     William Lake appeared on the 1901 British Census of at England, Durham County, in the household of his father William Lake, listed as a coal miner.2 William Lake emigrated with 3 of his brothers and their father, William Lake Sr. on 24 March 1904 from Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They were from Homeside, County Durham, England; to Canada, landing at Halifax. They sailed on the "Bavarian." They came from Homeside, County Durham, England.8

However, he was back in England at the time of, or shortly after the war broke out. He attested that he had previously served with the 19th Alberta Dragoons, a militia group.1

     George Henry Lake of Auton Hind, Bear Park, England began military service on 16 November 1914 at the age of 28 at Sunderland, Durham County, England, joining the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was an unmarried farmer. He had previous military experience with the 19th Alberta Dragoons, a militia group. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin as his father, William Lake of Asquith, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was described as being 5' 9 1/2".1
     On between 16 November 1914 and 16 October 1915, he served in France.1 Gunner George Henry Lake ended his military service on 21 September 1918 according to a pension notice issued in Dover, England on Oct 28, 1918. Much of his service file is not legible, and I cannot find a reason for this "early" discharge.

     Thomas Henry Lake of Asquith began military service on 27 January 1916 at the age of 19 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 65th battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was an unmarried farmer, although elsewhere in his file he is identified as a farrier. He was described as being 5' 8 1/4" with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. He was assigned regimental number 472990.4
     On 18 June 1916 or 20 June 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit sailed for England aboard the "S.S. Empress of Britain." THey arrived 28 Jun 1916.4
     On 12 August 1916, he transferred to France joining the 72nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.4 He was killed in action on 1 March 1917 at France. He had been serving with the 72nd Battalion in the trenches near Souchez

     He was commonly known as Tom Lake.2

Thomas Lake appeared on the 1901 British Census of at England, Durham County, in the household of his father William Lake.3
