     Lt. Joseph Bostic died on 10 June 1955, when he attempted to land his burning jet at Bishop Field, at Genesee County, Michigan, USA, at age 27. He overshot the landing field and crashed in a wheatfield 1 mile away. He was trapped in the cockpit with his leg pinned by wreckage. He pled to have his leg cut off, but a wing tank exploded, killing him.1,6,7,8 According to military records: his wife was Mrs. Joseph A. Bostic. His grandfather, Joseph N. Arends, arranged shipment of his headstone to Park Cemetery.4

     Joseph Nicholas Arends died on 3 March 1929, at his home, at Malden, Cotton Hill Twp., Dunklin County, Missouri, USA, at age 75.1
     
     He was commonly known as Joe Arends.1
     Joseph N. and Dora F. Arends appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Cotton Hill County, Missouri, enumerated 20 April 1910, described as a merchant in "Kilgit?" general store. Their daughter, Jennie T, was listed as living with them. He was from Germany and had naturalized in 1859.2
     The following obituary appeared in the newspaper The Twice-A-Week Dunklin Democrat published in Kennett, Missouri 5 March 1929:
JOE ARENDS, 75, DIED SUNDAY; PIONEER MERCHANT AT MALDEN
     Native of Germany, Came to U. S, When 5 Years Old; ln Malden Since 1878;Funeral Today.
     Funeral services for Joe Arends, 73, pioneer merchant of this county, who died at his home In .Malden at 1:40 p. in. Sunday, following a brief Illness, will he held at 10 a. m. today (Tuesday) the services to be held all the Catholic church in Malden and burial will be in Park Cemetery. Mr. Aranda hail been sick only a week, and this was the first serious Illness during the more than 75 years of his life.. Death was from pneumonia.
     Mr. Arends was truly one of the pioneer merchants of this county, and had been one of the leading business men of his community for more than a half century, coming to Malden in 1878 when he became connected with the firm, which was one of the out few (sic) years later became a member of the J. S. Levi Mercantile Co., and a standing establishments of this section for a great many years, the store having been discontinued a little more than a year ago. During the fifty years that Mr. Arends was so closely associated with the people of this county In a business way, ho made hundreds of friends who will learn of his passing with the deepest regret.
     Joseph Nicholas Arends was born January 6, 1854, at Aix LaChapelle, Germany, but came to America with his parents when he was a small lad, the family locating at Mobile. Ala., in 1859. There his father engaged In the manufacture of powder and ammunition for the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
     When he was a boy 15 years old, he left home and went out In the world to make his own. He went at first to the City of New York, where he remained for a few years, and then came west to seek his fortune, locating at Malden, where he was given employment by the J. S. Levi Mercantile Co., an outstanding store of this county at that time. By giving the strictest attention to his duties and showing e natural aptitude for business he was taken into the firm In 1889, and continued an active member of this firm until Its dissolution last year.when he and his partner, A. Lebermuth, sold out.
     It was while Mr Arends was a member of the firm that the Levi Mercantile Co. built the first brick building house In Malden. This building burned a number of years ago. More than 30 years ago, Mr. Arends moved to Kennett where he lived for a few years, while The Levi Co.. operated a store In this city, but he returned to Malden about thirty years ago, and has continuously made his home there since. Mr. Arends looked after the buying of cotton for his firm, and as one of our subscribers, who was In this office Monday, said, there were few loads of cotton which had come to Malden, up until a few years ago. that were not Inspected by Mr. Arends.
     Mr. Arends was married September 3, 1895 to Miss Dora Francis Xavier (Miss Dora Keen.) who with four children, survives. The children are Robert, now of Birmingham, Ala; Mrs. Jeannette Bostic, Malden; John, of St. Louis and Joseph, Malden.
     Honorary pall-bearers at the funeral today will be C. M. Edwards, T. B. Kent, M. P. Kingsolving, Sam G. Downing, E. B. Lee, W. S. Starrett, C. L. Chandler, A. Lebermuth, Dr. G. T. Van Cleve, E. C. Johnson, Dr, John T. Van Cleve, H. N. Phillips, Judge W. S. C. Walker, and Sen. T. R. R. , Ely.
