Biography

Obadiah Bowen, Sr., was born on 3 January 1627 in Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales.1

Obadiah Bowen, Sr., married Marg Clifton.

Obadiah Bowen, Sr., died on 10 September 1710 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, at age 83.1
Obadiah Bowen, Sr., emigrated with Richard Bowen circa 1640 in Wales to Plymouth Colony, British Colonial America.2

From History of Swansea, MA 1667-1917 by Otis Olney Wright 1917: The township was granted at the court at New Plymouth in 1667 and was signed by 55 persons including Obadiah Bowen, Jr. Founders of the town included Pastor John Myles who had earlier founded the first Baptist Church in Massachusetts at Rehobath in 1663. It was the reorganization of an existing church drive from Wales. Pastor Myles started the church in Wales 1645-1649 under Cromwell who was relatively lenient to dissenters. But with the coming of Charles II and the Act of Uniformity in 1662, 2,000 ministers were ejected for not conforming to the Church of England. Myles emigrated and brought members of his congregation. He preached til his death in 1683.|

From King Philip's War by Schultz and Tougias: The town was not really established until 1671 and it abutted the land of Philip's tribe. It consisted at this time of forty houses "connected with Plymouth by forty miles of Wampanoag trails." By 1675 when the war began with an attack on Swansea it was also home to the so-called Miles or Myles garrison. On June 19, 1675, a home was looted. The next day a home was burned, followed by several others on the 23rd [of June 1675] and finally the killing of seven settlers on the 24th. The war had begun.

Richard Bowen was perhaps born in Glamorganshire, Wales about 1594 according to lore, but this is far

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 24 records of rosters, pay, allowances, and provisions for the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons under Col. Elisha Sheldon. The volume includes an account of the clothing delivered to each member of the troops, along with their names and ranks; the amounts of provisions of food and drink received for the use of General John Glover; soldiers' pay as directed by Congress; allowances of subsistence money supplied to the officers in lieu of rations for themselves and their servants; as well as muster rolls for each troop in the 2nd Regiment, listing each member's name, rank, term of enlistment, and "casualties." The collection also includes a copy of a letter which requests permission to hire tailors to make clothing for the Army.

Elijah Janes was paymaster of the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons, where he served under Col. Elisha Sheldon. He began his military career as a cornet on November 16, 1779 and was promoted to Lieutenant eight days later. He was wounded by a horseman's sword on the right wrist on November 20, 1780, and became Paymaster in 1782. The friendship that developed between Janes and fellow lieutenant in Sheldon's regiment James Dole continued after the war and their move to Lansingburgh (now Troy), NY, where Janes became godfather to Dole's daughter. In 1811 Elijah Janes became one of the original directors of the Farmers Bank of Troy. He died February 22, 1823 at the age of 64 and is buried in the Old Lansingburgh (Troy) Cemetery

In 1781 he was a Lieutenant of Dragoons in Colonel [Elisha] Sheldon's regiment and a Quartermaster in 1782. The 2nd Continental Light Dragoons, also known as Sheldon's Horse after Colonel Elisha Sheldon, was commissioned by the Continental Congress on 12 December 1776,[1] and was first mustered at Wethersfield, Connecticut, in March 1777 for service with the Continental Army. The regiment consisted of four troops from Connecticut, one troop each largely from Massachusetts and New Jersey, and two companies of light infantry.

On December 12, 1776, Congress constituted the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons at Wethersfield, CT, also known as Sheldon's horse after its commander, Elisha Sheldon of CT, for service with the Continental Army. Congress authorized George Washington to appoint the other officers of the regiment, but he gave the duty to Sheldon. In accordance with General Washington's instructions, the new regiment was to have one other field officer, a major; a regimental staff of an adjutant, a surgeon, and a surgeon's mate; and 6 troops. Each troop was to consist of a captain, a lieutenant, a cornet, a quartermaster, 2 sergeants, 2 corporals, a trumpeter, a farrier, and 34 privates. The regiment saw action at the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Crooked Billet, and the Battle of Yorktown. The regiment was furloughed June 9, 1783 at Newburgh, New York and disbanded on November 20, 1783
