Biography

Abigail Ingraham was born circa 1636. |CAVEAT: Abigail, wife of Samuel Cheesbrough, Joshua Holmes, and James Avery, is often said to be a daughter of Richard Ingraham; however, her LNAB is not even known to be Ingraham, there are no records to connect her to Richard Ingraham, and she has no known connection to Rehoboth.[5].

Abigail Ingraham married Samuel Cheesbrough on 30 November 1655 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Many secondary sources sources give [Samuel Cheesbrough's bride's name as Ingraham, but the evidence for this is not seen. The only Ingraham family to which she could belong is that of Richard Ingraham of Rehoboth. He is the right age and in the right place to be the father of Samuel's wife, but this ingraham family is very poorly defined, and only sons [William, Jarrett & John] are known for certain [TAG 19:78, 21:190-91, 22:60-61]. Source: Th.

Abigail Ingraham married Joshua Holmes, Sr., in 1675.1

Abigail Ingraham married Capt. James Avery in 1698.1

Abigail Ingraham died after 9 September 1715 in Groton, New London County, Connecticut. Abigail was living 9 Sep 1715 when she states that she has received full satisfaction from her two sons for her right of dower in the estate of Samuel Cheeseborough. (Stonington Deeds, Book 2:292.)1 She was buried in Wequetequock Burial Ground, Stonington, New London County, Connecticut.2

Her parents were Richard Ingraham/Ingram and Elizabeth Wignall. The family arrived between 1638 and 1642. (Five records support the arrival of the Richard Ingraham/Ingram family between 1638 and 1642. There are two, however, that have ~1628/9. If this is the case, then the birth location of all the children would be Massachusetts.)
The main source for the following information is "A Record of Some of the Ancestors of Guilford Solon Tingley and His Wife, Martha Pamelia Mey," pages 155-157, unless otherwise noted.

Samuel Cheesebrough Sr and Abigail Ingram married 30 Nov 1655 at Boston, MA. They were the parents of seven children:
Abigail/30 Sep 1656 (Mrs John Avery, Sr)
    Marie/28 Feb 1657/58 - 25 Sep 1669
    Samuel, Jr/20 Nov 1660 m. Marie Ingraham
    William, Sr/8 Apr 1662 m. Mary MacDowell
Sarah/24 Dec 1663 (Mrs John Bolton, Sr)
Elisha, Sr/4 Apr 1667 m. Mary Minor; 2) Rebecca Mason
Elizabeth/6 Jan 1669 (Mrs William Ingraham, Jr)

In 1675, Joshua Holmes was invited by the widow Abigail [Ingraham] Chesebrough to teach at a school in Stonington, New London County, CT.

Joshua Holmes and Abigail married 15 Jun 1675. They were the parents of two children:
    Mary/1676 (Mrs Isaac Thompson)
    Joshua, Jr/20 Aug 1678 m. Fear Sturgis

On 4 Jul 1698, Abigail married Capt James Avery in Boston, Suolk Co, MA. No children were born to this union.

Abigail was living 9 Sep 1715 when she states that she has received full satisfaction from her two sons for her right of dower in the estate of Samuel Cheeseborough. (Stonington Deeds, Book 2:292.)

According to "Connecticut, Deaths and Burials Index, 1650-1934," Abigail was about 81 when she died ~1716/7.

Note: Anderson in The Great Migration Begins explains, "Many secondary sources give the bride's surname as Ingraham, but the evidence for this is not seen. The only Ingraham family to which she could belong is that of Richard Ingraham of Rehoboth. He is of the right age and in the right place to be father of Samuel's wife, but this Ingraham family is very poorly defined, and only sons are known for certain." Since there are other sources supporting the connection, will leave it for now.
