Sophia L. Cushing married David Gibbens, Jr., son of David Gibbens, Sr., and Mary Devine, on 22 January 1872 in Kings County, New York.1,6

Her husband, Alexander, died on 31 August 1865 in Brewerton, Onondaga County, New York, at age 48, leaving her a widow.1,10,11

She is living either with or next to the homesteads of her brother Luther David Shepard and nephew Herbert Shepard [erroneously listed as Herbert Allen in the 1880 census].12 She was a farmer in 1880.13 She appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of Elverton C.
