Emma K. Houghton
July 4. 1910- December 23, 2006 Emma Houghton and her twin sister Christliebe were born in New Danzig, Russia July 4, 1910. Her twin sister died at the age of eleven months.In April
1912 Emma sailed to America with her parents Paul and Emelie Kohl and her brother Alexander.
They sailed on the ship Pretoria and were on the ocean the night the Titanic sank. Because of dense fog the ship Pretoria did not continue to sail until the next day. It took two weeks
to arrive in New York. After leaving Ellis Island the traveled by train to North Dakota whore thev made their home in Elgin where she received her elementary and high school education. She continued her education graduating from the State College at Dickinson. North Dakota where she received a scholarship and studied drama at the Priscilla Beach Theater at Plymouth, Massachusetts. She took part in plays and preformed at
U.S.O. centers. She married Glenn Houghton in 1946 and in 1954 they moved to California. She attended San Francisco State College and graduated from Stanislaus College. She taught in elementary schools for forty-two years. Her last twenty years of teaching were at Weaver School in Merced. She retired in 1975.
She is a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, the California Retired Teachers' association and A.A.R.P. She was a very loving kind person. She cared about animals and took in strays and cared for them until she found the own-
