NEW YORK - William Haughton, one of harness racing’s premier trainer-drivers, died yesterday of brain injuries suffered in a racing spill July 5. He was 62.
Haughton died at the West- chester Medical Center in Val- halla, N.Y., where he had been in a coma since the accident at Yonkers Raceway. He was thrown backward from the sulky and his head hit the track with such impact that his helmet split.
Among Haughton’s victories were four Hambletonians, five Little Brown Jugs, and seven Messenger Stakes. He won 4,910 races and $40.2 million in a 40-year career. He was elected to the harness racing Hall of Fame and watched his sons Peter. Tommy, and Cammie become drivers. Peter was killed in a one-car crash near The Meadowlands Racetrack Jan. 25, 1980.
At the time of his death, Peter owned, trained, and drove a 3- year-old trotter named Burgomeister. On Aug. 30, 1980, Haughton drove Burgomeister to a straight-heats victory in the Hambletonian, the showcase of trotting, at DuQuoin, III.
Haughton was fast friends with another Hall of Famer, Stanley Dancer. "He never had a bad word for anybody else," said Dancer. "He could get along with some owners that I couldn’t have."
At the beginning of 1986, Haughton’s stable was the biggest in North America. "He was Mr. Class and to have this happen at this late stage of his career is a tragedy," said Lou Guida, who owned horses trained by Haughton including the brilliant pacer Nihilator.
Haughton, who was born Nov. 2, 1923, at Gloversville, N.Y., and lived in Jericho, N.Y., led the nation in winners from 1953 through 1958 and led in money won from 1952 through 1959. He was highly successful right up to his death with Nihilator, Green Speed, Falcon Almahurst, and McKinzie Almahurst, among others.
A wake will be held today and tomorrow from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Orlando’s Funeral Par- lor in Oyster Bay, N.Y. A funer- al service will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Brookville Friday at 11 a.m., with internment to follow.
