REVEAL CHICAGO GIRL’S MARRIAGE AT 13; A MOTHER
Wed Since Early in 1936; Told in Court.
Chicago has its own child marriage, it was disclosed yesterday—a girl married at 13 to a boy of 18. The girl, only 14 years old now, is the mother of a baby 7 months old. She comes from an early narrying : family, according to relatives. They said her father was 15 when he married her mother, who was than 17. The young wife’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Peterson of 1126 North LaSalle street, said she herself was married at 15.
Disclosed in Court Action. The child wife is Mrs Dorothy Mae whose baby arrived last August, shortly before her fourteenth birthday. Her husband is Theodore Houghton, They have been living in a room at 1140 North La Salle street with their son, Teddy.
Dorothy Mael a slender brunette, said she left grammar school to marry Houghton Feb. 5, 1936, because she didn’t like the little boys and girls she had to play with there. Disclosure of the marriage, which rivals Tennessee’s celebrated child.
court when Mrs. Amy O. King of 1112 North Dearborn street, Dorothy Mae's paternal grandmother and guardian, asked permission to withdrew $300 from the child wife’s bank account. Mrs. King told Judge John F. O’Connell Dorothy Mae wanted to furnish an apartment for her husband I and baby. Records showed that Dorothy Mae gave her age in the marriage license application as 18. ¡Houghton! gave his as 21. They were married in Marriage court by Judge Clyde H. Thompson. She Keeps House on a Budget.
Both Dorothy Mae's parents are dead. Her mother, who had become Mrs. Mad L. Alarid, left her $4,000 insurance upon her death in Santa Fe, N. M., in 1931. Because Dorothy's guardian has been withdrawing $25 a month for the couple’s support, and hospital bills took more when the baby was born, the account has dwindled to $800. Dorothy Mae was indignant at the excitement caused by the revelation of her marriage. Her husband said he had known her a year before they were married, and thought at first she was much older than she proved to be. " She’s a good cook,” he said, " and keeps house on a budget” Dorothy Mae's to get the $300 to spend.

Yakima Wash and Kenneth R Sword Albany; two step daughters Susanne Hoy, Astona. and Betty Cuningham Mount Angel. two brothers Herbert Haughton Terrebone, and Neal Haughton Dyre, Ind., one sister Lois Austin Gardena Calif. and 17 grandchildren
