CHOTEAU - Ernest L. Houghton, 78, died Thursday southwest of Choteau of hypothermia while hunting. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church and a second service will be held later in Carlisle, Iowa, with burial in the Carlisle Cemetery. Houghton was born March 7, 1916, in Mendon Mines, Mo. He received his education in Indianola, Iowa. He served in the Army during World War II and later worked as an engineer for Iowa Power and Light. In 1987 he married Alberta Clearman in Mesa, Ariz. Houghton was a member of United Methodist Church and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, traveling, reading and working on his cars and lawn. Surviving are his wife of Choteau a son, Leo Houghton of Carlisle Iowa; three sisters, Velma Wilkinson of Salem, Ore., Betty Lancaster of Mulberry, Kan., and Hazel McGuire of Liberty, Iowa; a brother, Gerald Houghton of Kansas City, Mo; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christina, in 1985 and a daughter.

Funeral service was conducted Aug. 11 at the Damar Funeral Home, Justice. Burial was in Fairmount Willow Hills Cemetery, Willow Springs.¹

Obituary

Frederick W. Houghton, Jr., 91, passed away October 3, 2020 at Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home in Springville.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. on April 26, 1929 to the late Frederick W. Sr. and Nellie (nee Beale) Houghton. He married Dorothy Cline on Sept. 15, 1951 in Hamburg.
He was a United States Army Korean War Veteran and enjoyed golfing, skiing, astronomy and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling to Civil War battlefields and was active with the Civil War Trust. Frederick was a real estate manager for 34 years for Exxon Mobile in New York City until he retired in 1987.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Mary Ruth Runge. Frederick is survived by his wife Dorothy; children Douglas (Kathy) Houghton of Orchard Park and Stacie (Joseph) Decker of Springville; grandchildren Nathaniel Houghton, Claire Houghton, Kathryne (Jeremy) McCarthy and Joseph Decker Jr; great-grandchildren Maggie and Cole McCarthy and several nieces and nephews. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Orchard Park.
