FLORENCE - A memorial service will be held Aug. 26 for Herbert C. Houghton of Florence, who died Aug. 15 of a stroke. He was 93.

Houghton was born Aug. 15, 1912, in Florence, to Jesse and Laura Houghton. He married Winifred Waite, and she later died. He married Dorcas "Doris" Carson in 1944.

He was a lifelong resident of Florence. He served in the Coast Guard and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s in Oregon, including work on rock retaining walls for Highway 101 near the Sea Lion Caves.

He later became a dairy farmer after buying the family farm from his father. He was listed on the honor roll of the Lane County Dairy Herd Improvement Association for his herd's milk production. He retired in 1968.

Houghton enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, travel, hunting, digging clams and horse backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Nancy Bullis of Corvallis, Arlene Rankin of Hermiston and Charlotte Lockwood of Florence; a son, Jess Houghton of Keyport, Wash; a stepson, Milton Carson of Anchorage; and numerous grandchildren and great-grand- children.

Friday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at Florence Church of the Nazarene. Inurnment will be at Pacific Sunset Cemetery in Florence.

Burns' Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.²
