Research Mary Belser, 2010: I am still struggling to find the father of James, Michael and Charles. I see that there is a "James Houghton" b. abt 1820 in the 1880 census. I would have ruled him out as he says his name is James and he is from Ireland but I notice that the children include a James, Michael and Charles with their dates just slightly off. I see that a 50 year old Englishman, James Houghton was arrested on Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn suffering from "delirum tremens". (Brooklyn Eagle 9 Sept 1871). In 1885 a Mary Houghton (with a married brother James and a father of "intemperate habits" and a mother who died in an insane asylum) commited suicide (Brooklyn Eagle 30 Nov 1885). Perhaps the family was in no condition to answer the census questions correctly. I see that "John James" is a name used by others so maybe either name may have been used. My mother said that there were 10 children in her father's family. John and Mary (Radigan) Houghton had 10 children, I forgot to say that my mother said only 3 (James, Michael and Charles) lived. I assume that she meant until adulthood.
