Annis "Betty" E. (Houghton) Eaton, age 84, of Fairhaven, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at St Luke's Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Harold P. Eaton.
Born in New Market, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Jeannette (Colombin) Houghton.
Betty worked as a tie in girl at New Bedford Rayon and a secretary at Text Worker's Union of America. She enjoyed reading and cooking. Betty had been a member of Good Shepherd since 1958 and had served the church in many ways. She had served on the Vestry for many terms and was Treasurer for 17 years. She also taught Sunday School. She had an all boy's class because back then the boys and girls were separated. -"and they were a handful", she said. In 1975 she became a licensed Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer, enabling her to give Communion to home-bound parishioners when it was needed. Betty always supported any activities the church had and worked in the kitchen for many events. Her favorite service to the church had been working on the Altar Guild, which she started doing in 1958. She said being on the Altar Guild is "very close to my heart". "You learn so much" when you work on the Altar Guild. It's more than preparing for the service- you learn all the meanings of the seasons of the Church Year-the different colors used and the special preparations.
Survivors in addition to her husband are her children Sandra Alphone and her husband James of Florida, Robin Eaton of New Bedford; four grandchildren, Bethany, Amy and Michael Prast, David Eaton and one great-grandchild, Isabella Andrini. She was the mother of the late William Prast, Jr and Linda E. Prast. She was the sister of the late George Nelson, Ellen Buhlmaier and Alberta Rogers.
Her funeral will be held Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 11am at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 357 Main Street, Fairhaven. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Burial will be on Monday, July 30th, at 10am in Riverside Cemetery. Friends and family welcome. COLUMBIA -- Barbara Houghton Davis, formerly of Newton, Maine, Wellesley, Maine, Princeton, N.J., and Worcester, Maine, passed away in her sleep in Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital November 3, 2007, after a long, brave struggle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack and she is survived by her daughter, Suzanne J. McDonald of Chapel Hill, N.C., her son, Jack Davis and his wife Barbara of Gloucester, Maine, and her four grandchildren, Zachary, Max, Samantha and Alexandra.

She was born in Newton, Maine, graduated from Mt. Ida College, and worked at MIT during WW II. She was also a realtor in Worcester, Maine, before moving to South Carolina. Throughout most of her life, she was a competitive tennis player and an avid bridge player.

In Columbia, she served as president of the Women's Club of Columbia, where she worked on the Literacy Council and the WW II Memorial in Five Points. She was also a strong supporter of Operation Smile, raising funds for correcting cleft lips, and she volunteered many hours at Providence Hospital.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. December 8 at the Keenan Chapel in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Sumter St. in Columbia. Instead of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Greater Columbia Literacy Council or Operation Smile, www.operationsmile.org.2

The couple were identified as Gordon and Winsome Houghton of Spring Valley. Police said Gordon Houghton, 86, shot and killed himself after shooting Winsome Houghton, 95, who was bedridden and being treated in the hospital's cardiac unit. It appears Gordon Houghton was distraught over his wife's medical condition, but hospital officials said the family wants to keep the couple's personal details private. "The fact that it was an apparent murder-suicide is especially distressing, because we do try to work with families who are dealing with a difficult diagnosis," said Don Stanziano, a spokesman for Scripps Green Hospital. "Your heart really goes out to people in that scenario." A phone call to the couple's Spring Valley home was picked up by an answering machine. An elderly male voice says, "You have reached the home of Gordon and Winnie. ... Why not brighten up our day with a message? Thank you." The couple lived in a mobile home park for senior citizens off Jamacha Boulevard. Several bird feeders hang from their pale pink and white unit with a mountain view. A decorative green frog sits on a shelf on the front of the unit, and a small garden with rose bushes and a lemon tree dots the side yard. The park's assistant manager, Paulette Speck, had known the Houghtons for years. She said Winsome Houghton was very quiet and Gordon Houghton was friendly, often waving to her on his daily walks around the community. "He always looked like he was out of the '60s," Speck said, noting Gordon Houghton wore bell-bottom pants and tied his gray hair in a ponytail that stretched about halfway down his back. Speck said Winsome Houghton had been "sick for a while. I haven't seen her in a long, long time. "He took care of her while she was sick," Speck said. "He didn't seem like the kind of person who would do this." The shootings occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on the first floor of the hospital, homicide Lt. Jeff Sferra said. There were no other patients or hospital staff in the room at the time. Hospital workers heard gunshots, Sferra said. A nurse went to the room and found Gordon Houghton seated in a chair with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Next to him, on the bed, was his wife. A gun was nearby. Winsome Houghton was still alive, but she was struggling. "Hospital staff came to her assistance, but she passed away within a minute of the shooting," Sferra said. "At the time, we did not see any bullet wound and did not know how she died." A medical examiner's investigator discovered she had been shot. Police said there were no witnesses to the shooting. After the gunshots were heard, security and medical personnel were mobilized through a Code Blue signal indicating a medical emergency, said Johnny Hagerman, the hospital's marketing and communications director. Security officers blocked off the room, and police sent a homicide unit. Counselors were called to assist employees or others who needed help dealing with the incident, Hagerman said. The shots were heard by people visiting patients at the hospital. "I heard a pop-pop sound," said Nathan George, who was visiting a relative. "I know gunfire and this was gunfire. I didn't know what was going on." Visitor George Johnson said he heard the same sounds and then saw security personnel running toward an elevator. "It was unnerving," Johnson said. "In this day and age, you just don't know anymore when you hear these sounds." Hospitals are one of the few remaining public institutions that haven't increased security in recent years. At Scripps Green, for example, there are no metal detectors and security guards aren't armed. "We ask that visitors check in at the desk and get a badge. We try to keep track of who is coming and going, but there's a lot of people coming in and out of a hospital," said Stanziano, the hospital's spokesman. Steve Escoboza, CEO of the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties, said he's not aware of a hospital in either county with metal detectors. "It's not feasible to have security devices in hospitals that you would see in airports and courthouses," Escoboza said. "Hospitals are large places with numerous entrances and exits.
