Obituary

Richard Anthony Houghton, 60, died Monday, (March 1,2004) at his home in Ashland. A memorial service will be held at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland Street, Ashland, on Saturday, March 13, at 10 a.m., celebrated by the Rev. Harvey Ray. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Richard was born September 4, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, to Richard and Anne Houghton. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a bachelor's degree in English.
He served two separate tours of duty in Viet Nam, from 1960 to 1964, in the Army's 82nd and 25th divisions, and from 1968 to 1971, in the First Air Cavalry Division as a helicopter pilot. Richard earned a National Defense Service Medal, Army Aviator Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Air Medal w/1st 29th Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, and two overseas service bars. Richard has worked as a helicopter pilot commercially for over 20 years. His work has taken him to every continent of the world, and has included logging, tuna spotting, crane setting, oil exploration, oil support, air-lift support of Navy ships, tourism, and fire-fighting.
Richard was a proud member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, and spent his last years working for the California Department of Forestry. Richard is survived by his wife of 20 years, Deirdre Barber; two daughters, Morgan Gaura, of Redding California, and Elizabeth Barber of Ashland; two sons, Paul Houghton of Las Vegas, NV, and John Houghton of Ashland, and three grandchildren.¹
