LUZERNE-HADLEY — Shooting himself through the left side of his chest and armpit, Joseph Houghton, 74, a lifelong resident of Hadley Hills, a hamlet about five miles north of Hadley, committed suicide about 6 o’clock Saturday morning at his home. Dr. George N. Thompson of Luzerne, acting as coroner's physician for Dr. A W. Johnson of Mechanicville. Saratoga county coroner, conducted an investigation and gave as the cause of death “gunshot wound with suicidal intent while mentally deranged.”
Mr. Houghton, a retired farmer, and his son, Scott, resided alone on Hadley Hill. Dr. Thompson said that Houghton had apparently placed the butt of the gun against the floor with the muzzle against the left side of his chest. The bullet, the coroner’s physician said, struck the left arm- pit, tearing away blood vessels, breaking his arm and then lodging in the celling of the room. Mr. Houghton lived only a short time, the doctor reported, dying from hemorrhage, a short time after the shooting.
In addition to the son mentioned he is survived by another son, Beecher; and three daughters; Mrs. William Eastwood and Mrs. Frank Dwyer of Hadley Hill and Mrs. Arthur Knott of Palmer; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs Frank Dwyer on Hadley Hill and Interment will be in the family plot in the Hadley Hill cemetery.
