Deceased Name: JOSEPH HOUGHTON, 77 WAS A BOSTON DISTRICT FIRE CHIEF
Joseph Albert Houghton of Melrose, a retired district chief of the Boston Fire Department, died Sunday in Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. He was 77.

Mr. Houghton was born in Boston. After serving in the Coast Guard during World War II, he joined the Boston Fire Department in 1947. He was a district chief from 1973 until 1986.

He leaves his wife, Virginia L. (Rae); a daughter, Mary-Louise Polo of Ivoryton, Conn; two brothers, Daniel F. of Winthrop and Robert M. of Stoneham; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.⁵

STERLING -- Mary A. (Burke) Houghton, 91, of Sholan Terrace, died Thursday, Aug. 16, in the Christopher House, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, Woodbury Houghton died in 1963. She leaves a son, Michael J. Houghton of Sterling; a daughter, Carolyn Catalani of Worcester; a sister, Madiline Joppila of Lexington; nine grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. A son, Ronald W. Houghton of Sterling, died in 1982. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of William and Catherine (Tierny) Burke. She lived in Sterling for more than 50 years. She graduated from St. Bernard's High School in Fitchburg.

Mrs. Houghton worked for Village Pharmacy in Sterling for 25 years. She was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church.

The funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 20, in Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Richard's Church, 4 Bridge St. Burial will be in Hill Side Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.¹

OBITUARY

George W. Houghton, 69, of East Hanover died yesterday in Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church of Hanover. Arrangements are by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home of Livingston.

Mr. Houghton was a security guard for the Wells Fargo Bank for 10 years, retiring in 1992. Previously he was a computer programmer for Litton Industries in Morris Plains for many years.

He was a life member of the American Philatelic Society and the Tri-State Railway Historical Society.

Mr. Houghton served as a first class seaman in the Navy during World War II. Born in Springfield, Mass., he lived in Rutherford before moving to East Hanover 37 years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley; a son, Paul; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Troll, and a grandchild.
