Dear Dr. Vella,

I found your Houghton web site while searching for information about Hoagland Gates (1891-1944). I am not related to Mr. Gates, but per a history of the Sherwood family written in the early 1940s, at that time Mr. Gates owned a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland called Auctill, which was the family's ancestral home place. Through your site, I was able to discover that Mr. Gates had a daughter, Anne Gates (Mrs. Copley) of Newark, Delaware. I found some posts I think she wrote on genealogy message boards, the last one being in 2003. I wrote an email to her, but it was just returned as undeliverable. I wonder if you know Mrs. Copley personally, and if she is still living?

I am attaching a copy of the letter I wrote to Mrs. Copley. I am hoping you might be able to forward it to her, or perhaps to her children. From the information I found on line, I suspect Hoagland Gates' mother died at Auctill, and he was living there in 1917, though he apparently bought another plantation in 1928. I'd think it likely that his daughter would have photographs of the place, and might be able to tell me if it is still standing.

I saw where you'd made some genealogy postings on the Genforum web site, and wonder if you are perhaps related to Hoagland Gates (1891-1944).

I am searching for information on Mr. Gates because, per a history of the Sherwood family written in the early 1940s, he owned a plantation called Auctill in Talbot County, Maryland, the Sherwood's ancestral home place. I've found information on line about another plantation Mr. Gates owned, Broadlands in Cecil County, Maryland. This is not Auctill.

Per a family tree I found on line, Mr. Gates' mother, Elizabeth Hoagland (Mrs. Charles) Gates, died in Talbot Co., Maryland in 1927. I also found where Hoagland Gates filled out a World War One registration in Talbot Co. in 1917, but I don't find him or his mother on the 1920 census there.

The reason I am interested in learning more about Auctill is that my fifth great grandfather, Daniel Sherwood III (1749-1838), was born there. He and his wife, Frances Linthicum (1749-1806), sold Auctill to Matthias (Matthew) Tilghman in 1778, and came to North Carolina.

I don't know whether Daniel II or Daniel I built Auctill. Hugh built a plantation called Crooked Intention (Still standing) when he first came to Maryland in the 1660s, and later lived and died at Huntington (I think it is still standing, but now called Wheatlands, and has been considerably altered.)
