ObituaryMay 5, 1934James Houghton, Native of Town, Dies At Capital
Lieutenant-commander James E Houghton, an officer in the United States Naval Service and a native of Northumberland, died Thursday afternoon at Washington, D. C.
following an illness of many months. He was 43 years of age. Dr. Houghton had been on sick leave since the first of the year and had been treated in the Naval hospital at Washington for an ailment eved to have been contracted from exposure in the Philippines during the World War. He had been able to be about and his condition did not become serious until several days ago. Dr. Houghton was the son of James Clifford and Elizabeth Gaskins Houghton and was born in Northumberland on August 11,
1891. He received his early education in the Northumberland schools and at the age of 18 years enlisted in the U. S. Naval Service. He later enrolled at George Wash-
ington University and graduated with his doctor's degree. He had been a physician in the Naval Sevices for approximately 20 years. During World War II he served in the Philippines. Later he was located in California, Panama, Bostojn, and finally Washington. His father James C. Houghton formerly conducted a jewelry store in Northumberland and is now located in Washington where he is in government service for many years. The son was a member of the Episcopal church at Washington.
Starting as a private he reached a high position in the service thru hard work and application. He was well known in Northumberland having been a frequent visitor here in the past. Surviving are his father, his wife, the former Betty Fordyce, of Washington, and a son and a daughter, James, Jr., aged 16 and Betty, aged 13.
Funeral services have not been announced. Mrs. B. A. Duncan, a cousin, of Seventh and Duke Sts., left this morning to visit the grief stricken family at Washington.
It is probable that burial will be made in the Arlington National cemetery.

DeathOct 7, 1905Philadelphia, PA, USA, Frank committed suicide, at his home, 2041 Lawrence Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was reportedly infatuated with his sister-in-law, and also drank excessively.
NewspaperOct 9, 1905Ignorant That He Was an Heir, Penniless Young Man Suicides', Wilkes-Barre Times, Monday, 9 October 1905, p.6, cols.6-7; image copy, Newspapers (https://www.newspapers.com/image/119427895/ : accessed 26 February 2025).

'IGNORANT THAT HE WAS AN HEIR, PENNILESS YOUNG MAN SUICIDES'

'PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9—Not knowing that he had just inherited $50,000, Frank Houghton, the wayward son of Dr. Charles W. Houghton, ended his life by inhaling gas in his room, at 2041 North Lawrence street, early yesterday morning.'

'Houghton's besetting failing was drink. He came home after midnight after his Saturday evening trip around among his boon companions. Mrs. Joseph Doan, with whom he boarded, detected the odor of gas. The door was forced, it being necessary to push away a heavy bed. On the floor beyond the bed was Houghton's lifeless body. The gas jet was wide open and all the windows tightly closed.'

'HEIR TO AUNT'S ESTATE.'

'Every week Houghton received an allowance of $10 from his father, who is living, with his third wife, at 2031 North Grant street. The young man—he was only 32—spent most of his money for drink, and then borrowed to get through the week. He was in arrears for his rent, and Saturday night was in such stress that he borrowed ten cents from a member of the family.'

'Now that the man is dead, it is disclosed that his aunt, Mrs. Craig, of Haddonfield, N.J., died three weeks ago. Her death removed the last life tenant on the estate of Houghton's mother, who was the second wife of Dr. Houghton. Before her death she tied up her property in a life estate, so that her sons could not share until her [page 2] sister was death. The estate was on the point of being divided, and if young Houghton had lived he would have shared in the property to the amount of $50,000.'

'In Houghton's room were found many love letters, treasures of a romance years ago. He had frequently spoken of this love affair to his friends.'

'SAYS HE LOVED SISTER-IN-LAW.

'On the dresser, Houghton had carefully placed his photograph side by side with that of his brother's wife—this being Mrs. Horace Houghton. Houghton often talked of this woman in a strain that indicated that his admiration for her was quite extraordinary. Her first name is "Ethel."'

'Mr. Doan said yesterday that when Houghton was in his cups he had often seen him sitting in front of the picture. He would say:'

'"I love Ethel dearly. She and mother are the only ones I cared for in all this world. Ethel will not have anything more to do with me know. Oh, how I want to die!"'

'Horace Houghton and his wife were believed to be out of the city. They could not be found yesterday. Dr. Houghton was in Gettysburg yesterday and has been telegraphed to return.'

'Frank Houghton was well started in life as a boy. He was sent to the Rutledge school, Seventh and Norris streets. Later, he was expected to study medicine. Instead, he embarked in business pursuits. His mother, almost worried to her grave over her unfortunate son, died eighteen months ago.'

Succumbed to Gas', Philadelphia Inquirer, Monday, 9 October 1905, p.8, col.4;

'SUCCUMBED TO GAS'

'Young Gettsburg Man found Dead in This City'

'Frank Houghton, 33 years old, of 2041 Lawrence street, committed suicide, the police say, by inhaling gas late Saturday night. Houghton is the son of a well-known physician of Gettysburg [sic], Pa. He had been boarding at the Lawrence street address with Joseph Doan for the past five months. He had not done any work, as he received an income from home. The young man's death is attributed to despondency.'

'Houghton retired late Saturday evening. When the Doan family arose yesterday morning they detected an odor of gas coming from Houghton's room. When they tried to enter the apartment the bed placed against he door barred the way. The door was finally broken down, and the man was found lying dead on the bed. All the windows were down and the room was filled with gas.'
