ResearchMuch of the data on the descendants of James Lemond Haven, was checked with Jessica Barnes Jolly's Ancestry Tree of her family.
BiographyBarbara Haven: Notes for JAMES LEMOND HAVEN:
James Lemond Haven, born at Cincinnati, Ohio on Vine Street east side, about opposite the end of what was then Center Street, now Longworth St. In 1827 the family moved into a brick house in Center Street near Race, now no. Longworth Street which was given to Fanny B. Haven in heir of all further claims and demands on the estate of her father or mother by her mother.
Notes for REBECCA HOPKINS PADDACK:
Father and Mother Paddack lived at the same table with his Father and Mother, and all worked together, dividing the net profits equally until the death of Grandmother Paddack in 1831, and of Grandfather in 1832, and from that time to 1850 Father and Mother continued on the Carthage farm. The orchard yielded great quantities of apples and in the years from 1832 to 1837 they made great quantities of cider. The family consisted of their six children and a bound boy, James McWhenny, who stayed until he was 18 years old when he became discontented and Father gave up all claim to him and he learned the tailor's trade with John Van Rink, of Carthage and then lived in the city and worked at his trade.
The girls and this boy had their day's work to pick 60 bushels of apples, Father with their help griding and pressing in te evening and in the morning taking 6 or more barrels to City. One year he got 73 cents per barrel for 50 barrels; another year he sold Sam'l S. Smith 250 barrels at $1.00 per barrel; another year he got $287.50 for 300 bbls. Very little help was hired, indoors or out. After 1840 Father rented out more or less of the farm every year. John Gordon, Henry Moody and John Sheehan each in turn1

BiographyBarbara Haven: George Irwin Haven, the son of James Lemond and Rebecca (Paddock) Haven, was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, August 15, 1851. The sad mystery which involves his fate has not, and probably never will be, solved; but, as nothing has been heard of him for now nearly nine yeas, it is difficult to believe that he is still alive.
As a boy, he was a conscientous student, and graduated from the Woodward High School in Cincinnati with the highest rank. He passed the examinations at Cambridge in 1869, but was prevented by ill-health from entering college until the following year, and thus became a member of our class. His active mind and clear understanding enabled him to maintain a more than average rank; though he was by no means a hard student, did not confine his reading to the requirements of the college curriculum, and was for six months of Senior year at home assisting his father during the business depression general over the country at that time.
Immediately after graduation he resumed his place in his faher's works, and in 1876 was made superintendent, showing in that position conspicuous business ability, which was one of his marked characteristics while in college. Actively engaged in the manaement of a large manufacturing establishment, he yet found time to read law, and was in due course admitted to the Cincinnati bar, never, however, practicing this profession.
Early in 1883 a roof fell upon him, nearly crushing him to the ground, and while at he time he was apparently but slightly injured, symptoms appeared later which in December caused him to give up business. In March 1884, he went to Europe with his father, remaining six months. He returned to te Continent later in the year, this time alone, and in te summer of 1885 was in New York City on his way home. August 22 he left the Astor House, presumably to take the train; and from that time to this nothing has, but the most persistent efforts, been discovered that could even be considered a clue to his further movements. It may be said that a most prominent symptom of his illness was an unconquerable drowsiness, so marked that, while on a tour in te Rocky Mountains in 1883 he would fall asleep on his horse in the most dangerous places, and that it is not inconceivable that his death may in some way have been due to this conition of things.
George Haven's friends were many, and he kept them; for he was always the same. Holding decided opinions and an intense hater of sham ad pretence, a serious quarrel with him seemd an impossibility. That sturdy common sense with which he was to a remarkable degree endowed carried him through shoals and over quicksands of opinion where many a man had seen his fiendships wrecked. H was one of those men that people instinctively trust, - honest, steady, able, and reliable, - the future man of affairs.
In college he was teasurer of the Pi Eta Societh, and was the first business ditor of the Magenta, later the Crimson. He was one of the organizers of the University Club of Cincinnati, and took an active part in its affairs until his health failed. Fnd of nature, his great delight was to be out of doors; and his summers were largely spent in genuine tramps about the countr. In this way he walked through the White Mountains, the Pennsylvania coal regions, the mountains of West Virginia, and the atskills in our own country, and in Europe the Black Forest, Tyrol, the Alps, and a considerable portion of Southern England and the Isle of Wight, sometimes with classmaes and sometimes alone. His kindness to all classmates who passed through Cincinnati was proverbial. His kindness and generosity to those in prverty and misfortune were known to better a few.
Those of us who knew him best will always cherish his memory as that of a dear and true friend.
The above from Class of 1874 of Harvard College Class secretary report.
Addendum by JLH 1999
After the disappearance of George Irwin Haven, the family employed the detective Cal Crim to determine what happened. His firm persisted in a search over a long period of time but produced no information. About 1935 the family received correspondence from a Boston attorney who was handling the estate after the death of George Irwin Haven who had lived for some time as a recluse in a small dwelling by a cranberry bot in Massachusetts. Among his belongings were referenes to his Cincinnati origins.2
