LetterNov 7, 1868"Middleport [N.Y.], Nov. 7, 1868
A. C. Haven
Your letter of inquiry directed to the P.M. [postmaster] at Middleport, was to-day handed to my aunt, Polly F. Williams, second daughter of Nathaniel Haven, now 75 years of age, and at her request I hasten to repley. The only surviving children of my grandfather are Aunt Williams, her oldest sister Sally, now living at Kankakee, Illinois, and her youngest brother Allen, living in Madison, Wisconsin. My Grandfather died here with his daughter in the summer of 1847. My own father, Samuel T. Haven, died two years ago last May.
Your letter has awakened a lively interest and anxeity in the minds of both myself and aunt, to know more of our family relations.
Will you please write again soon and give us your full name, and tell us who was your father, and how many of the cousins are living, and where they are located?
Respectfully yours,
L. W. Edgerton
daughter of S.T. Haven"3
Letter1869J. W. McCoy: "Against all odds, a letter written by Sally Uran to her cousin Allen Clark Uran, dated 1869, has survived in the collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. It was a response to his query about family history and includes a complete record of her family, in her own handwriting. In addition, there are at least two letters from her neice Louisa Edgerton of Maquoketa, Iowa giving many additional details."
"Letters transcribed from correspondence donated by Dwight Craig Haven to NYGBS, 1933:
"My Dear Cousin
Jan. 16th 1869
I received your letter January 9th. I was pleased to hear I had a cousin. One of my father's brothers son. I have seen your father a good many times but dident know he had any son's. His first wife's children died. I heard he was married again but dident know he had any children. I saw my uncle Clark Haven's for the firtst time when I was fourteen years of age. I have seen him several times since, but it is a great while ago. I should lke to see you and your brother, and your mother, if she is living. I live in Illinois, next time you come so near me I would like to have you come and see me. I would like to hear from you often. Write all the particulars about them. I have three daughters, they all live in Iowa. Samuel & James live in Minn. Jonathan Uran lives in Ill., Bourbonnais Grove Kankakee Co. I can't think of any more particulars to write. When I write again I will write more. Write soon.
From your Cousin,
Sally S. Uran

P.S. If I live till Oct. I shall be Eighty years of age." [Marginal notation: "I made a mistake in the deaths of second Nathaniel, it ought to been in below George."]

AuthorHaven Genealogy MSS7
Notable1933NY, USA, Hake: The Haven MSS by Judge D. C. Haven of Willmington, NC was willed to the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society (122 E. 58th St., New York City). He spent 40 years collecting information for this Haven-Havens project, but it was unfinished at his death about 1935. The MSS consist of four very large red leather-bound volumes, entitled "Haven Genealogy", with hand-written information for approximately 8000 Haven and allied family names (4 forms [CJV: 3 forms] to each page with printed surname Haven on each form). The books were made by a Blank-Book & Printer Co. in Joliet, Il in 1933. Besides the four volumes, there are several loose leaf notebooks of notes and correspondence and a bound copy of "R. Haven---and of Samuel Haven, 4th Gen., a Rev. War Soldier". D. C. Haven was a 9th gener. desc. of Richard Haven, through the youngest son, Moses Haven. (Microfilms 0001204-0001205 of LDS collection: manuscript is 2008 pages in 4 volumes: V. 1: no. 1-1767; V. 2: no. 1801-3600a; V. 3: 3601-4707; V. 4: 6005-8112); Bowen: "compiler of MSS. on the Haven family from which author has drawn most of data and to whom he feels greatly indebted"; Harvard Collection7,8,5
