At 17 years of age he bought his time, went to western N.Y. and worked for Samuel Ewell, whose dau. he m.
He bore a scar upon his forehead, received when but four years of age, caused by a fall from the fence while watching the soldiers passing by his father's house to the battlefields of Plattsburgh, N.Y., in 1814, in which battle his brother Josiah E. was engaged."³
