Virkus: "B.S., Norwich, '63. Civil and mining engr; in charge 10 miles construction, Buda branch C., B.& Q., Wyoming, Ill., 1869. Iowa pioneer coal mine discoverer and operator...Residences: 15595 Baylis Av., Detroit, Mich., and 451 S. Yorktown St., Tulsa, Okla."

Haven: "In charge 10 miles construction, Buda branch C. B. & Q.R.R. 1870. 1875, Asst. and Supt. Union Coal and Mining Co., Ottumwa, Iowa. Discovered col in Lucas County, 38 miles west of any workable beds then known. In 1876 organized Whitebreast Coal and Mining Co. It's first President. This company became the largest shipper of coal in Iowa. Installed the first electric arch light and third telephone for business purposes in the state. In 1883 sold interest, with pledge not to engage in coal mining for ten years.
In 1882 had entered into partnership with cousin, William Roscoe Haven, in construction work. Erected all shops except first building of West Shore R. R. at East Buffalo, N.Y. Receivership of West Shore with settlements of fifty per cent about broke us. While waiting for settlement of West Shore matters, we built the government building (post office, etc.) at Syracuse, N.Y. Got the compliment from Supervising Architect Bell that we were the first contractors under him that had constructed a building on time. Dissolved partnership, moved to Omaha, Neb., then to St. Joseph, Mo., without business success.
1894 returned to Iowa, wife, four children and $7500.00 in debt. Rediscovered workable coal in Lucas Co. (County abandoned for coal in 1892). Organized Inland Col Co. and Western Iowa Development Co. Obtained options on 40,000 acres in Lucas and adjoining counties. Discovered by two inch core diamond drills, prospecting about 200 holes, five separate basins aggregating nearly 10,000 acres. In operting had loyal assistants, no employee strikes, only one fatal accident, his father exonerated the company, making no claim. Sold interest in 1914 and retired. Residence: 15595 Baylis Ave., Detroit, Mich."^1,6

In London, ofificials of the Liverpool & London & Globe were working out a solution, to the end that the fire menace would no
longer be rooted in the hearts of San Franciscans. Protection against fire was brought to the Pacific Coast, when in 1852 the English company appointed Joshua P. Haven its agent at San Francisco. Thus, Pacific Coast insurance history began seventy years ago. Mr. Haven, issuing policies for the Liverpool & London & Globe, enjoyed a monopoly for two years.
