Biography

H. Houghton: He entered the preparatory department of Indiana Univ. when he was 19. His father had moved his family to Bloomington for thee purpose of educating his children. Hileary was a student until his graduation from the State University with an A.B. in June, 1880. For one year he taught in the public schools of Parke Co., Indiana. He was admitted to the bar in Martin Co.. "Judge" Houghton practiced in Loogootee and had a partnership with ex-Senator G. W. Alford until Dec. 1884. He then partnered with Ephraim Moser, until the later's death. For the next 5 years, until his election to the State Senate, he practiced law with James B. Marshall at Shoals. He sought public office and was elected four times. In 1894 he was elected as a Republican to the Indiana State Senate, serving in the 1895 and 1897 sessions. He was elected to the office of judge of ther 49th judicial district in 1898 and was re-elected in 1904, serving 12 years and retiring in 1910. He then reopened a law office at Shoals until Feb. 1918 when he moved to Vincennes. He worked until his death, frequently being called upon to sit as Special Judge in the Knox Circuit Court. He was a Mason and a Knight of Pythias.⁹
