BiographyHayward S. Houghton: Upon his first marriage he settled on the farm owned and (until then) operated by his in-laws John and Lucy Kimball at 155 Great Road in the Nashoba section of Littleton. Upon the marriage of his oldest son, James Frederick on November 8, 1888, the farm was turned over to him and Charles and Abby Frances bought and moved into the house at 6 Foster Street at Litttleton Center where they lived during the remainder of their lives...
His grandson, Hayward remembers Charles Ward Houghton as a very quiet man, nearly blind in his later years, but known by reputation in Littleton as kind and gentle. He was one of the first in town to equip his farm with devices to save labor. He is said to have bought one of the first washing machines and installed an early windmill. Both Charles and Abby Frances are rembered as very devout. Grace at meals was never omitted; letters and birthday cards were of a religious tenor.21
