Notes for George HINSON
Emigrated to the Colonies from England via Ireland (or Spain), married twice. Had 3 children (names unknown) by first wife (name unknown), no record of marriage termination.
31526 May 1741 George Hinson of Washington Parish was presented for living in adultery with Margaret MOZINGO, the wife of Francis Chandler. The case against George Hinson was dismissed on 27 February 1741/2 when it was suggested to the court that he had run away.
3161755 George had a son Elijah HINSON in VA. This son, Elijah, served in the Revolutionary war and is recognized in the DAR Patriot's Index. Elijah served from 7/1778 to 4/1779 serving as orderly sergeant in Capt. W. Bradley’s Company B of the 3rd North Carolina Regiment. So Elijah was obviously in North Carolina in 1778 and possibly for a few years before 1778.
1755-1772 is the probable period in which George’s family moved from VA to NC.
October 1772, Court records of Dobbs Inferior Court (Dobbs Co., NC) declared that George Hinson ,a very poor aged infirm man, be exempted from paying Public Taxes & doing Public Duties

Research notes for George HINSON
Two George Hinsons and Two Elijah Hinsons as sons...
The two different stories of the two different George & Elijah Hinsons are confusing, but they are gradually becoming more clear. But I am quite certain that both George and Elijah Hinsons are two different father and son pairs.
-------- George(1) & Elijah(1) Hinson of Stafford Co., VA -------------
George Hinson(1) of Stafford, VA , father of Elijah(1) Hinson of Stafford, VA appears and disappears in Stafford , VA. He married first Margaret Burchell in Dec 1746 and had three children. Margaret died in Nov 1752 leaving George(1) with three children aged approximately 5 years, 2 years and a 1-month old infant. George(1) married again, in Feb 1753, to Sarah Sullivan. No doubt the care of his three children influenced him to marry so close to the death of his first wife. George(1) and Sarah had one more child, Elijah(1). The sources for most of the names and dates are the records of Overwharton Parish from 1720 to 1820.
Not much more is known of the first three children of George(1) Hinson and first wife Margaret Burchell. However George(1)'s second wife Sarah and their son Elijah(1) continued to live together in Stafford, VA for at least the period 1785 - 1790 as proven by the Tax roles and census counts for Stafford, VA. This time frame is significant because this is the same period when the OTHER Elijah(2) Hinson was in Olde Dobbs Co., NC as proven by census and land transactions.
----- George(2) & Elijah(2) Hinson of Washington Parish, VA and Olde Dobbs Co., NC ---
The George(2) Hinson of VA is reputed to have a first wife (name unknown) and three children (names unknown).
It is beguiling to assume that his first wife and three children were Margaret Burchell and her three children of Stafford VA. However, this is unlikely because the George(1) Hinson of Stafford, VA who married Margaret Burchell also married Sarah Sullivan shortly after the death of Margaret Burchell (see above) and had son Elijah in May 1754. So George(1) was married and living in Stafford, VA for at least the period 1746 to 1754. George(2) Hinson, however, was mentioned in the Nov 1753 will of Edward Mozingo as George Henson with wife Margaret Mozingo.
So George(1) and George(2) Hinson are most likely two different people married to two different women.
George(2) Hinson was associated with Margaret Mozingo as early as 1741 in Westmoreland Co., VA in what was alleged to be an adulterous relationship. However, the Nov 1753 will of Edward Mozingo referred to Margaret as George's wife. According to DAR records, George(2) Hinson and Margaret had a son Elijah in 1755 on the James River in VA. There is little or no proof of this date. However George(2) is found in Olde Dobbs Co., NC in 1772.
George(2)'s son Elijah(2) served in the NC troops of the American Revolution from 1778-1779. Elijah(2) is found in land transactions of Olde Dobbs Co., NC in the period 1779-1799 and is also found in the 1790 and 1800 census of Wayne Co., NC.
These time periods are significant because Elijah(1) Hinson is found in Stafford, VA in an overlapping time frame (see above).
So Elijah(1) and Elijah(2) Hinson are definitely two different people.
