| Note | In 1881, aged just 1 year old, he is found in the home of John Ball and his wife Lois - and he is said to be the nephew of John Ball. It is unusual for such a young child to be away from both parents but perhaps father Peter Webster Critchley has already left home for New York. Mother Eunice seems to be working and living in the home of another family. I note that next door to John Ball is the family of William Sherwood, also a file cutter and his wife Jane. I wonder whether this is a connection to James Sherwood. |

| Birth | He was born between October and December 1879 in Prescot Mother is shown as Hayes.1 |
| Baptism | He was baptised on 27 January 1880 in Rainhill, Lancashire, England, Address: St. Anne's Entry reads "Father left England for America US Mother in Rainhillâ€â€¦so, clearly it is not a secret that Peter Critchley left his family for America. Of course, we do not know the details, perhaps he was planning to get a job and find a home, and then for Eunice to follow him. What we do know is that he never came back and he found a new wife and presumably did not confess that he was already married., St. Ann.2 |

| Crime | He; 24 June 1906; Prescot; Address: Rainhill ... if you wish to know more about this, please write to me. Matthew pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 4 months hard labour. That's what you get for horsing around. I dunno about this, you know, he's a relative. He's one of us. |
| Courtcase | He; 3 August 1906; Liverpool, Lancashire, EnglandO; Trial - Offence Buggery - Plea Guilty - Sentence 4 months hard labour3 |
| Marriage | Matthew Critchley and Elizabeth Platt were married on 25 May 1912 in Liverpool Address: St Nicholas Matthew gives his age as 29 years - if he was born as we think in January 1880, then he would be 32 years old, so he is either lying, the scribe has made a mistake or we have the wrong birth date or who knows. He says his father was Peter Critchley and he is deceased - well, he ran off to the USA so maybe presumed dead is what happened. In my opiniom, it is more likely that they actually do not know (or care ?) that Peter Webster Critchley is alive in the USA. |
| Milit-Beg | Matthew's military career started in 1918. in the South Lancashire Regiment, 1st/4th Battalion. |
| Death | He died on 11 April 1918 in France at the end of WWI. |

| His father Peter Webster Critchley died on 20 May 1926 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. |
