| Biography | Let's call him "Samuel the Cabinet Maker". In 1840, the family were living in Belgrave Place. In 1844 at the time of his son's ( Thomas ) christening at St. Mary's, they were living at Belgrave Place. Later at the time of their son Samuel's wedding in 1872, he was described as a candle-maker ! My own view is that this must be a transcription error - I mean, is it really likely that a cabinetmaker would have a mid life crisis and start pushing candles for a living at the time when gas and electricity was becoming all the rage ....... rather than pursuing his trade as a cabinet maker ? This is undoubtedly the same Samuel Snelson who was admitted as a freeman of the City of Chester on 2 July 1839, when he was described as a cabinet maker of Handbridge. The pre 1837 marriage registers are not as detailed as the later ones, and the entry does not tell us who the fathers were. Neither of the witnesses was a Snelson either ( they were Catherine Roberts and George Billington ).3 |
