He had inherited the barony of Hedingham on the death of his father Aubrey de Vere II in May 1141, when he was already Count of Guînes by right of his wife Beatrice. In July 1141 he was granted an earldom by the Empress Matilda, and was confirmed as the first earl of Oxford by her son King Henry II of England. On the annulment of his first marriage, between 1144-46, he lost Guînes. Earl Aubrey was little involved in national political affairs after this period. His attempt to divorce his third wife, Agnes of Essex, was a celebrated marriage case that Agnes appealed successfully to Pope Alexander III. In 1153 he was present with King Stephen's army at the siege of Wallingford and attested at the Treaty of Wallingford, finally signed at Westminster. Two of his sons by Agnes, Aubrey IV and Robert, became earls of Oxford. Robert, the third earl, was one of the 25 rebel barons who were to hold King John to the terms of Magna Carta.1 |

| Biography | Roger lives at 23 Knowsley Road, Hoole Chester, CH2 3RL. He became a freeman of the City of Chester on 21 April 1961, when he was described as a clerk of 19 Vicarage Road. Richard James Snelson visited Roger on Saturday 15 April 1989 and relates that he worked for Ellesmere Port local authority. He was an only child and now the last of the line, because his Uncle Hubert who married Elsie Unknown did not have any children. In later life, Hubert became a bit of a recluse according to Roger. My theory is that the Sir Edward Snelson who married Greer Garson was the son of Thomas Snelson who was in fact Thomas Edward Snelson, son of Edward Snelson, the cordwainer born 1 January 1822, father of Robert the Hay Dealer ..... hence Roger could well have known him as " Uncle Tom " - even though he was his grandnephew. | Note | Event Memos from GEDCOM Import... Biography This is "Thomas the School". His real identitiy eluded me from the time I first tripped over him in 1970 while perusing the 1851 Census until my cousin Richard and I finally sorted out all the pieces in 1990. He was the schoolmaster at the school in Eccleston and the enumerator at the 1851 census. I thought from 1970 up to 1988 that he was my great great great grandfather, but no trace of Samuel being the son of a Thomas could be found. Eventually I discovered of course that Samuel was the son of William ( 1776 ). Richard and I have now I think got to the bottom of the great "Thomas the School"[:ITAL] mystery. Richard went to Eccleston in September 1988 with his brother, Barry and his nephew, Gareth ( the " gravebusters " ) ........ and they made an amazing series of discoveries. Firstly, Richard was looking for William Snelson ( 1776 )'s grave; the stones are hard to find ( but Richard knew they were there in 1971 when I had found them ). In addition, the stones are laid flat or have fallen and become covered by moss and grass and of course they are sandstone which means that they weather quickly and can soon become eroded and hard to read. To quote from Richard's letter to me ( 1 October 1988 ) :- "Eventually young Gareth, looking suitably attired for a visit to a churchyard in denim and T-shirt dedicated to the God of Heavy Metal, saw the name SNELSON on a stone". [:ITAL] The grave contained the remains of [:TAB:] [:TAB:] Frances SNELSON died 19 July 1805 aged 1 month, Emma SNELSON died 9 March 1831 aged 22 years Margaret SNELSON died 10 September 1845 aged 73 years, and - wait for it - Thomas SNELSON died 26 January 1853 aged 79 years. [:BOLD] Richard believes ( and I agree ) this to be the grave of the infamous ( in the sense that I have been trying to nail him for 17 years ) "Thomas the School[:ITAL]" ( Richards great name for the old bastard ), the enumerator in Eccleston 1851 census returns. It wasn't until September 1989 that I caught onto some other facts that seem to confirm that we have got this all tied up. I was out one night baby-sitting - we are a member of a group of families that baby-sit for each other - and I was lazing around as I often do, just perusing all this detail when I thought it would be worthwhile to try and write a small program to calculate the dates between which any event occurred; I don't know about you, but I have terrible trouble working these things out. So, I turned to a page of notes at random and found my footnote of an Eccleston Monument Inscription "Thomas SNELSON died Jan 26th 1853 aged 79 years". Therefore Thomas must have been born between 27 March 1773 and 26 March 1774. We also know from the 1851 Census School House Thomas Snelson Widower Schoolmaster 77 born in Farndon [:UND] So, Thomas must have been born between Apr 1773 and Apr 1774. So I thought I'd try and see whether anything else fitted, and there it was. I've had all this information for years but hadn't been able to hang it together. The key is here [:TAB:] Farndon Register (C.B. Mixed) 1772-83 in P45/1/2 on Mf 152/1 [:TAB:] p78 11 Apr 1773 buried Thomas Snelson of Farndon [:TAB:] p79 26 Sep 1773 christened Thomas son of Thomas & Mary SNELSON [:TAB:] .......N.B. this entry inserted out of sequence [:TAB:] p87 28 May 1780 christened Phoebe base daughter of Mary SNELSON of Farndon [:TAB:] p89 9 Dec 1781 christened Elizabeth base daughter of Mary SNELSON of Farndon[:BOLD] This must be the family of Thomas the School.[:ITAL] He was indeed born in Farndon and it looks as if his father Thomas died the same year; his mother Mary had two other children, his half-sisters Phoebe ( 1780 ) and Elizabeth ( 1781 ). I think he is the same Thomas Snelson listed in the 1850 Cheshire Directory as the Parish Clerk. His death cerificate describes him also as a clerk. Is it likeluy that a local Schoolmaster might also be the Parish Clerk ? That's what it looks like. Eccleston Monument Inscriptions (Thomas the School) (42.21 ECC) Frances SNELSON died Jul 19th 1805 aged 1 month. Emma SNELSON died Mar 9th 1831 aged 22 years. Margaret SNELSON died Sep 10th 1843 aged 73 years. [:TAB:] Also Thomas SNELSON died Jan 26th 1853 aged 79 years. [:CR:]. |
