Biography
The Yorkist forces defeated Henry VI's Royalist Army at Blore Heath which is next to Eccleshall in Staffordshire. At this stage, I don't know what side Sir Adam was on - I suspect he was one of the many prominent landowners under the command of James Tuchet ( Lord Audley ) in the Prince's Army. Audley and many Cheshire knights and esquires were slain; others including Lord Dudley were captured by Salisbury's men and the Northerners. Next day, Sir Thomas Harrington and Lord Salisbury's younger sons Sir Thomas and Sir John Neville were captured at Acton Bridge on the road between Nantwich and Tarporley.
In 1424, he apparently entered into a bond not to leave Chester Castle.
Previously, prior to 1427, he had been under the protection of his guardian, John de Kyngesley, with whom he was late in feud. This must have been pretty intense, as he was bound over to keep the peace at least 5 times.
In fact, he couldn't keep out of trouble, as he had serious confrontations with a Thomas de Hyll and George de Wevere. For once, on the other end of the law, he was commissioned in 1434 to arrest Henry Moreton and John Croxton.
On the other hand, he must have been respected because when Edward came to the throne, he was bound over to keep the peace - but this doesn't make sense if he was killed at Blore Heath. What's happening here ?
He held lands in Eccleston, Calveley, Wettenhall and Wygland, Alsager, Moulton and Tetton around about 1443. In 1449-50, he was then in trouble as the old arguments arose again with Thomas, the Abbot of Vale-Royal. This battle was still raging in 1452.
There is some confusion with the Inquisitiuon Post Mortem, which seems to indicate that he died on 30 April 1475 - disagreeing with the well known Visitation record alluded to elsewhere. Burke's Landed Gentry says that he FOUGHT at Blore Heath !
According to Raymond Richards in his book "Old Cheshire Churches", in 1572 Sampson Erdeswick who lived in the locality, recorded particulars of no less than 50 coats of arms on the walls and in various windows of Church Minshull ( St. Bartholomew ). One of the achievements related to a Bostock who died by poison and who was the son of a knight slain at Blore Heath.
I have actually seen a document purportedly drafted by A.J. Bostock suggesting that he was born in 1506 ! I can only assume that this is a quite uncharacteristic error from this historian. It must be an early draft which has suffered the fate of others transcription. Nvertheless, I am assuming it is a typograhical error and should read 1406, which would fit with everything else apart from making him a bit on the young side for incarceration in Chester castle, but not impossible.
