| Biography | Debrett's has it that her family arrived in Australia in 1848. She died at the age of 75 and is buried at Gulgong. She lived with her husband Harry on block 414 or at Broad Oak.
Interestingly, I found a mention of a William Thurston of Guntawang at the Gulgong Pioneer Museum on September 29 1989. William Thurston died on Aprill 11 1885 when he was shot by police. He was a member of the Thurston Angel gang - criminals, not bush rangers. They ( Thurston and Angel ) had escaped from the Coonamble Lock-up, during which Constable Mitchell had been shot and killed. The two fugitives were ambushed by three policemen at a store owned by Charles Stewart at Slasher's Flat on the Mudgees side of the Belinfante Bridge. Thurston was shot dead, and Angell mortally wounded. Stewart was also shot dead. A rumour spread that Stewart had been shot by the traps ( police ), not the criminals. The story was reinforced by Angell to a priest as he lay dying. The stigma stuck and the police were very unpopular for some time with the Gulgong community, who thought that the police had acted irresponsibly to the innocent dead and the escaped criminals. Wallace Peter Snelson tells me that Henry ( Harry ) 's wife came from Chatswood, and that she was at John Snelson's Golden Wedding celebrations but did not marry Harry until he came back from the WW1. He was then working for Peter Snelson on the farm at Leeton, but went back to Gulgong to his own block. Henry had nobody to carry on Broad Oak, and sold it to some young men who had some other country to work in with it. This all seems to fit in. [:CR:]. |
