     John Benjamin Bartholomew was born on 23 June 1829 in Ohio.¹ He married first Sylvia Norton, daughter of Lauren Norton and Prudence Town, on 4 March 1852 in Geauga Co., Ohio.^3,4 He married second Kate Griffin on 20 September 1909 in Los Angeles Co., California.² He died on 16 July 1915 in Los Angeles Co., California, at age 86 of mitral insufficiency (a form of heart failure).^5,6 He was buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery (Sect. 33, Row A, No. 35) in Los Angeles Co., California.⁷
     He and his first wife Sylvia were living in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio, in 1860.⁸
     He served during the Civil War as a private in the 9th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery, enlisting on 2 October 1861 in Burton, Ohio, for three years service. The battery was mustered in on 11 October at Camp Wood in Cleveland, Ohio. They traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, in mid-December, where they were on duty at Camp Gilbert until 11 January 1862. They participated in the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky, on 19 January and at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky, on 29 March and 19 June, both Union victories. On 30 August they were at the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, a significant Union defeat. On 8 April 1863 they were part of a minor skirmish at Franklin, Tennessee, and fought at Triune, Tennessee on 11 June. They later joined Gen. Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign, from 28 July to 2 September 1864. John Bartholomew was mustered out on 24 October 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee, at the end of his term of service.^9,5,10,11
     In 1870, after the war, he and Sylvia were again living in Burton.¹² By 1880 they had moved to Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.¹³
     For the last 20 or so years of his life he lived in four different National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. His disability qualifying him as a resident was a paralysis of his left (or right) arm, contracted in August 1862 at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky, along with rheumatism.^14,15,16,5 He was admitted to the Central Branch home in Dayton, Montgomery Co., Ohio, on 14 August 1896, and discharged on 8 March 1897.^14,15 He was next admitted to the Pacific Branch home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles Co., California, on 28 June 1897^15,5, then transferred to the Southern Branch home in Hampton, Virginia, on 2 April 1898.^5,16,15 He is listed there in Chesapeake, Elizabeth City Co. (now the independent city of Hampton), Virginia, in the 1900 census.¹⁷ He transferred to the Mountain Branch home in Johnson City, Tennessee, on 21 April 1906, and left there on 20 May 1908^16,15, and was readmitted to the Pacific Branch home in Sawtelle, Los Angeles Co., California, on 1 July 1908, where he apparently lived the rest of his life.⁵ Although he was remarried in 1909, he and his second wife Kate are listed separately in the 1910 census, both in Malibu Twp., Los Angeles Co., California.^18,19
     He died intestate, and administration of his estate was granted to F. O. Culp on 11 September 1915. The estate was settled the same day, with the finding that it contained no property and no value.²⁰
     He and his first wife Sylvia had no known children.^8,12,13

     Adaline Hersey married Leonard C. Norton, son of Lauren Norton and Prudence Town, on 14 September 1848 in Geauga Co., Ohio.^2,3 She was buried at the Lower/Old Cemetery in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio.³

     Edwin C. Fisher married Roxanna Betsey Town, daughter of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 4 July 1867 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹
     He and Roxanna had two known children, Cora H. (b abt 1868) and Earnest.²

     Stephen Gates was born in February 1790 in Connecticut.^5,6 He married first Julia Tyler.⁷ He married second Sylvia Town, daughter of Isaac Town and Judith Hutchins, about 1827.^1,5,4 (The date is based on the birth date of 13 June 1826 for Lucinda Gates, Stephen's daughter from his first marriage, and 13 January 1828 for Prudence Gates, Stephen and Sylvia's daughter.)^8,9 He died in February 1868 in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.^5,2 He was buried at Gates Cemetery (also known as Young Cemetery) (Lot 5, Block 2, Grave 1) in Middlefield.^5,10
     He served for a little over a month during the War of 1812 as a private in Capt. Timothy Buell's Co., enlisting on 1 August 1813, and being discharged on 7 September.¹⁰
     He is listed in Ontario, New York, in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, in Ontario Co. in 1820, and Wayne Co. in 1830.^11,12 Soon after that he and his family moved to Ohio, where their daughter Louisa was born about 1831.⁶
     He bought 78 acres of land in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio, on 29 December 1831 from Sarah Parkman, widow and executrix of Samuel Parkman, for $207.¹³ Four years later, on 28 December 1835, he bought just over 12 acres in Batavia Twp. (now Middlefield Twp.), Geauga Co., from Isaac Gates and his wife Betsey for $62.¹⁴
     On 30 August 1836 he and his wife Sylvia exchanged property in Geauga Co. with Thomas Young and his wife Tryphena. He and Sylvia, then described as being "of Batavia," sold their 78 acres in Parkman to the Youngs for $200¹⁵, and bought 39.86 acres in Batavia from them for the same price.¹⁶ Stephen bought an additional 61.25 acres in Batavia Twp. on 17 December 1839 from John A. Rockwell and his wife Mary for $205.¹⁷
     He is listed in Batavia Twp. (now Middlefield Twp.) in the 1840 census.¹⁸ He and Sylvia and their children are listed in Middlefield Twp. in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.^6,19
     He and Sylvia sold 40 acres in Middlefield Twp. to Jacob Gates for $400 on 15 February 1844²⁰, and he bought 4.77 acres there from Joseph Gates and his wife Orella for $130 on 10 December 1855.²¹
     On 6 March 1866 they sold 78.22 acres in Middlefield Twp. (probably their homestead) to their son Lorenzo for $1950.²²

     Prudence Gates was born on 13 January 1828 in New York.¹ She married Eben Stolp.^2,4 She died on 15 March 1916 in Shabbona Twp., DeKalb Co., Illinois, at age 88 from pneumonia.¹ She was buried at Shabbona Grove Cemetery in Shabbona Grove, DeKalb Co.¹
     She was living in Shabbona, DeKalb Co., Illinois, in 1894.⁴

     Louisa M. Gates was born about 1831 in Ohio.^2,1 She married John Hubbard.^1,3
     She was living in Odessa Lake, Ionia Co., Michigan, in 1894.³

     Deborah M. Gates was born on 8 June 1833 in Ohio.^2,1,3 She died on 16 February 1854 at age 20.^2,1 She was buried at Young-Gates Cemetery in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.²

     Aralia Gates was born about 1835 in Ohio.^1,2
     She was living in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio, in 1894.³

     Lorinda Gates was born about 1838 in Ohio.^1,2 She may have died before 1894, as she is not listed as an heir in her mother's probate records.³

     Lorenzo Gates was born in June 1838 in Ohio.^2,3 He married Augusta McCall on 11 August 1866 in Geauga Co., Ohio.^2,1 He died in March 1905 at age 66.² He was buried at Village Cemetery in Chardon, Geauga Co., Ohio.²
     He served as a corporal in Company H of the 7th Ohio Infantry.²

     Augusta McCall was born in August 1844.¹ She married Lorenzo Gates, son of Stephen Gates and Sylvia Town, on 11 August 1866 in Geauga Co., Ohio.^1,2 She died in January 1909 at age 64.¹

     Clarissa Gates was born about 1842 in Ohio.² She married (?) Maynard.^1,3

     Fidelia J. Gates was born on 4 November 1844 in Ohio.^2,4 She died on 7 May 1862 at age 17.² She was buried at Young-Gates Cemetery in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.²

     Sidney P. Gates was born on 22 May 1847 in Ohio.^2,3 He died on 6 April 1855 at age 7.² He was buried at Young-Gates Cemetery in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio.²

     Hannah Furniss was born on 3 February 1812 in New York.¹ She married Isaac Earl Town, son of Orrin Town and Lydia Ann Ford, on 3 September 1835.¹ She died on 30 November 1886 at age 74.¹
     According to the July, 1888, "Firelands Pioneer", she and her husband Isaac moved from Pompey, Onondaga Co., New York, to Huron Co., Ohio, in the fall of 1836.¹

     Israel Barnes Pitkin was born on 13 June 1817.^1,2 He married Anna Town, daughter of Clark Town and Electa Churchill, on 17 March 1839 in Geauga Co., Ohio.² He died on 4 September 1877 at age 60.² He was buried at Lower/Old Cemetery in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio.¹
     He and Anna had one known child, Ithiel I. (b abt 1843, d 1 June 1849).²

     Ranseler Owen was born on 16 June 1812.¹ He married Louisa T. Town, daughter of Clark Town and Electa Churchill, on 11 February 1841 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ He died on 8 April 1895 at age 82.¹ He was buried at the Lower/Old Cemetery (Section 1, Lot 59) in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio.²
     He and Louisa had one known child, Ira (b 9 June 1849, d 12 March 1850).¹

     George W. Boorn was born about 1825 in Ohio.¹ He married Marcia Town, daughter of Clark Town and Electa Churchill, on 26 March 1851 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ He died in 1907.¹
     He and Marcia had the following known children: Ira (b 1854, d 18 January 1926), Alice E. (b 1854, d 1947), Walter A. (b 28 December 1857, d 31 December 1934), Frank (b abt 1858), Ida V. (b September 1861, d 29 January 1947), Ada V. (b abt 1864), Ernest C. (b abt 1866), Mertie (b abt 1870), Flora M. (b abt 1874).¹

     Orren Peckham was born on 12 March 1823.¹ He married Mary Ann Town, daughter of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 26 December 1848 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ He died on 16 September 1849 at age 26.¹
     He and Mary had one known child, Emely E. (b abt 1850, d 29 November 1874).¹

     Elijah G. White was born on 24 February 1810.¹ He married Mary Ann Town, daughter of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 7 February 1852 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ He died on 4 December 1904 at age 94.¹
     He and Mary had the following known children: Betsey L. (b 1855), Benjamin P. (b January 1860, d 27 April 1938), Mary May (b abt 1862, d 11 August 1880).¹

     Cordelia Bartholomew was born on 19 April 1837 in Burton, Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ She married Isaac John Town, son of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 3 November 1853.¹ She died on 20 April 1865 at age 28.¹
     In 1860 she and her husband Isaac were living in Middlefield, Geauga Co., Ohio, with real estate worth $1830, and personal property worth $300.¹ They had the following known children: Lyman A. (b 6 December 1854, d 5 January 1941), Sylvia (b 8 November 1856, d 15 March 1926), Orpha (b 24 January 1863, d 18 April 1864).¹

     Luna G. Smith was born in 1835.¹ She married Isaac John Town, son of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 20 June 1865 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ She died in 1913.¹
     She and Isaac had two known children, Ida J. (b 5 September 1867, d 1956) and Aro David (b 19 July 1872, d 7 December 1963).¹

     Sarah J. Town was born about 1843 in Huron Co., Ohio.¹ She married first her first cousin once removed Alfred Clark Town, son of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 9 August 1865 in Huron Co., Ohio.¹ She married second another first cousin once removed, and her first husband's brother, Ira Porter Town, son of Lyman Town and Betsey Porter, on 28 September 1901 in Geauga Co., Ohio.¹ She died on 15 March 1911.¹ She was buried at Overlook Cemetery in Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio.¹
     On 7 August 1888 she and her first husband Alfred sold a 41.1-acre parcel of land in Parkman Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, to Mrs. M. E. Gillen for $1200.¹ They had the following known children: Leroy A. (b 18 August 1865, d 1927), Perry A. (b 3 April 1868, d 18 March 1913), Frank (b abt 1869, d 1 January 1896), Clayton A. (b 23 April 1871, d 1871).¹
