On 15 September 1916, at Deoartment de la Somme, France, he was wounded in the upper right arm.

His service file provides the following details:
"He was stalking a machine gun when he was wounded by an explosive bullet glancing off his rifle. He was sent to Rouen and then the 2nd London General where they refused to operate.

Complains of pain in the forearm - weakness of elbow and wrist."

At the New Zealand Hospital, Godforth the following evaluation and recommendation were made:
"There is a large quantity of metal in the Right Arm which it would be inadvisable to operate for.

He is obviously unfit for further service. The power of the Arm is weakened."1
William Blake Mackay ended his military service on 5 June 1917 at New Zealand after serving in Egypt in 1915 and 1916, and then in Western Europe in 1916..
