She was born circa October 1802 at Yorkshire (North Riding), England, based uopn her baptism record.9,7 Jane Langdale was christened on 28 October 1802 at Leake, Yorkshire (North Riding), England.8,9 Alternatively, she may have been born on 17 September 1803 at Yorkshire, England, based upon her grave marker.2,3,6 Jane married James Smith on 25 February 1819 at St. Michael church, Cowesby, Yorkshire .2,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,6,7
Jane Langdale died on 1 July 1878 at Seward Twp., Winnebago County, Illinois, USA.3,17,2,18,14
Jane Langdale was buried at Prospect Cemetery, about 2 miles North of, Winnebago, Seward Twp., Winnebago County, Illinois, USA. An early photograph of the tombstone reads:
JANE wife of James Smith Died July 1, 1878 Age...
Today (Sept 1, 2004) the stone has fallen and has eroded so badly that only JANE is barely legible.19,17

She emigrated on 26 June 1830 from England. I presume she emigrated to USA at the same time as her husband James.20
Only the head of the household was named in the 1840 census, with the number of household members broken out by age and gender groupings. Jane appears to have been included in this statistical breakout of the household of James Smith.21
James and Jane Smith appeared on the 1851 Canadian Census (delayed) of Collingwood Twp., Grey County, Canada West, enumerated 12 January 1852. James was described as a farmer and a Baptist. Their children, James, Edward, Martha, John, Robert and Sarah, were listed as living with them. He had 200 acres at Lot 16, Concession 9, in Collingwood Township.22,7
James and Jane Smith appeared on the 1861 United Province of Canada Census of King Twp., York County, Canada West, enumerated circa 13 January 1861. James was described as a farmer and a Baptist. Their children, Edward, Sarah and Robert, were listed as living with them. They lived in a 1 1/2 story frame house.6
James and Jane Smith appeared on the 1870 U.S. Federal Census of Seward Twp., Winnebago County, Illinois, enumerated 28 July 1870, described as a farmer with real estate valued at $7,000 and a personal estate of $1,400. Their household included Sarah Smith who may have been their widowed daughter-in-law, and possible granchildren, Sarah J Smith, Edward Smith and William Smith and a laborer, William Smith.23
In the obituary of Sarah Hill Smith who died 21 June 1924, her mother, Jane Langdale was listed as predeceased.24
The following biographical information is from my (Rick Moffat's) personal knowledge or recollections, 12 June 2013:
Caution!

The following does not appear to refer to Jane, daughter of Thomas Langdale and Elizabeth Hill. Which Thomas Langdale is referenced?

Jonathan A Cotton wrote in his "Cotton's Keepsake," page 455:
Called upon my friend, Thomas Langdale and was never more pleasingly and happily entertained. His estimable daughter, Jane, is lady of the house, since the death of her dear good mother; and I must say, I never knew a daughter perform such a task better ; "neat as a pink" and "smart as a steel-trap" as was her younger sister, Martha. Every thing in and about the house was kept in "apple-pie order." Expressing my admiration to her neighbors, they said that she was an exception; that no encomium could exceed her merit. If she is not what some would call "a perfect beauty," she certainly is a very comely young lady, and her neat appearance, affability of manners, intelligence of mind, and amiability of hearty makes her both lovely and beautiful, indeed. And if I were a young man, I should, perchance, conceal this rich jewel, until I could exultingly call it my ovm, or at least try so to do. I devote this space as an act of justice to my fair friend. Miss Langdale, and to encourage all other daughters, similarly circumstanced, to "go thou and do likewise."25

Sioux City, Iowa, Oct. 12 - A Journal Manchester (Iowa) special says that while Democrats were firing guns to night in honor of their victory in Indiana the cannon burst, killing a man named Charles H. Jackson, and slightly wounding another.8

The following article appeared in the Manchester, Iowa The Press, 26 October 1876 :
Killed
Last Thursday evening, a few of our democratic citizens got out an old rusteaten cast-iron cannon, for the purpose of celebrating their victory in Indiana. They took it, about half past 9 o'clock, some ten rode west of the engine house on Main street, on the road graded up north of the pond, with the muzzle pointing south toward the marsh, and commenced firing, filling the piece after putting in the powder, with clay, sand, grass & rammed down as solidly as possible to make the noise of the discharge the louder. After firing five or six times the old thing exploded, as might have been expected, throwing the carriage in all directions, and literally blowing the piece itself to fragments. One piece, weighing 44 pounds, was thrown directly east W [unreadable word] west corner of the Clarence House, a distance of 134 paces. Two other large pieces went in directly an opposite line, for about the same distance. But the saddest thing of all is yet to relate. Standing about 30 feet west and a little north of the gun, was a young man named Charles H. Jackson, a spectator of the proceedings. A piece of the cannon struck him just at the top of the forehead, a trifle lowest on the left side. Both sides of the skull were fractured to the base of the brain, and the top of the skull was taken completely away, exposing the whole brain. Portions of the brain were found twelve feet distant from the body. As a matter of course his death was instantaneous.
That others were not hurt is remarkable. Quite a number were standing about, besides those engaged in firing the cannon. But with the exception of Jackson, no one was injured, worth mention. We are informed that those who got out the gun were cautioned not to use it, by those who knew something of its condition. It is deeply to be regretted that they did not heed the warning.
Young Jackson, who had just passed his 21st birthday, was a young man of most excellent character, steady, temperate, and industrious, and of a genial disposition that had made him many friends. He had been employed in the meat market of Rich & Smith for about three years, and was highly esteemed by them. He was a nephew of Mr. R. H. Smith, of that firm, and has four sisters and two brothers in Kansas. The funeral was held at Mr. Smith's house at 11 o'clock Saturday last, the services being conducted by Rev. B. Sheffer of the M. E. church and E. R. Silles of the Congregational. The utmost sympathy is felt by all for the relatives of the young man so suddenly taken from among us.2
